FIRES.
OUTBREAK TN CHEESE STORE. By Telegraph—-Press Association INVERCARGILL. April 8. At 1 p.m. to-day an outbreak of fire occurred at tho Southland Cool Stores buildings at Bluff. Charles Fox, an ex-member of the Bluff Fire Brigade, dealt with tho situation in a most expeditious manner. Finding tlie centre of the trouble to be located in the testing room high up under tho roof, lie climbed upon a. railway waggon in the siding, and thereby gained access to a window, through which ho was enabled to play a lead of water with good effect. Other leads from the stores were brought to bear, and the spread of the flames was quickly checked. By the time the Brigade arrived’, the fire was well in hand. Inspection revealed that tlie fire started in the cheese testing room, and the damage was confined to this and tlie adjoining oflico.
IN WELLINGTON GARAGE. By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, Aprill 8. A fire at Retone destroyed Messrs Whctton and Barber’s garage, along with a motor ’bus, an Essex car, tools and fittings. The hose had to bo kept playing on the underground petrol tank to prevent a damaging explosion. Some injury was done to the shops adjoining. The sum of £175 had just been spent on repairing the ’bus. Tho insurances were only £7OO, and til© loss heavy. DWELLING DESTROYED. By Tclexrraz>h —Proax Association GREYMOUTH, April 8. A Are destroyed a. nine-roomed house at Kai.'ita, occupied by Mr T. Johnston. Nobody was at home at the time. Nothing was saved. The insurance on the building was £340 in the State Office.
