INTERESTING COMPARATIVE STATEMENT. A comparative statement showing the payments received by members of the Legislatures of various • countries may not be without interest. In South Africa to-day are drawing £SOO, ■ of which £4OO is the statutory allowance, plus a temporary £IOO. It trill ‘be " remembered that during the war an extra £2OO was added to meet the increased cost o* living, but’this was reduced to the present amount ns the result of the late Government’s policy of retrenchment. The only privilege of importance is a free railway pass. The Commonwealth of Australia pays its members £IOOO per annum (with no deduction for absence), free railway passes, and lady typists at Governmen I expense ; |New Zealand: £450. No payment .for days absent in excess of 14. I‘rCe railway passes and life passes after nino years’ or more service. £1 P er day allowance to members gotng to and from session, once each way. Canada: For every session exceeding 50 clays, a sessional allowance of 4000 dollars. Members must attend on at least three-quarter of the days upon which the House sits. For fewer days 25 dollars per day. I‘ree transportation. Newfoundland: 500 dollars for session. No deductions for absence. Free transport. Ilouso of Commons: £4OO per annum for expenses (if oath has been taken). No transport privileges. Irish Free State:. £3bo ,per annum, with travelling allowances. France: 27,000 francs per annum, with travelling allowances. Germany : 12.000 marks per annum, with travelling allowances Italy: 15,000 lire per annum, with travelling allowances, Sweden: 3500 kroner per annum, with travelling allowances. United States: 10,000 dollars per annum, willi travelling allowances.
