POSTAL OFFICIAL IN TROUBLE. j By Teleeraph—Press Association. HAMILTON. April 7. A postal official of Hamilton, Charles Joseph Hugh Curry, pleaded guilty today, before Ah Wyvern Wilson, SAL, to nine charges of the theft of moneys belonging to the Government, the sums aggregatihg £BO 14s 6d.' It was shown that Cnrrv bad been employed by the Post' and Telegraph Department for 17f years, in different capacities. - Latterly he was engaged as clerk in the Money Order Office, where one of his duties was to take Savings 'Bank deposits. ' In nine cases cited he accepted deposits, and while entering them in the depositors’ books failed’td make an entry on the departmental cards, and pocketed the money.
Detective Sergeant Sweeney said that when interviewed, Curry made a full confession. Some'of tho thefts were of land and income tax payments. Accused attributed the thefts to overindulgence in drink, and said that he had arranged to makei restitution of tho misappropriated moneys out of his superannuation. He pleaded guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. LAAV CLERK’S LAPSE. By Telflffrapli—Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, April 7. Eric Donald Ross, law clerk, was charged this morning with the theft of £2OO from a woman client, and was remanded for a week. DRUNKEN DRIVER. By Telotrrapli—Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, April 7. Thomas Alan Fleming (28) was sentenced fo seven days’ gaol this morning on ii charge of driving a motor while intoxicated. The police gave evidence ..that the accused .'had been chased by a constable in another car,, as a complaint had been made.
