At 7. to p'm., the Band assembled outside the palace, and alter rendering a march, and two hymn tunes, marched op to the '.united open air service that was in .progress in Cathedral Square, under stiut'-captain .Martin. the fl imaru Band rendered a very fine selection in the open air, and then were escorted to the Salvation Army Citadel, in Victoria Square, by the Christchurch City Band, under bandmaster Taylor. At' 8 p.m. the great musical festival aas eommeneed uv a inarch by the United Bauds, including Christchurch Cite, Liuivood, Sydenham and Timaru. During the festival, the Timaru Band rendered the march entitled “Dartre, rd,” and a beautiful selection entitled •‘.Mv Shepherd.” Bandsman I). Hay ..■.lso' gave a very fine cornet solo. Th» Band also rendered several vocal items. Colonel Gunn, of headquarters staff, Wellington, presided at the. festival. On Sunday, all clay, special services were conducted in the Linwood Citadel by Captain Mackenzie,' and at all the services the .Band rendered several very line selections. The, afternoon meeting .was entirely devoted to a musical programme. ' The ‘evening service, which lasted two and one-quarter hours, afforded a treat to lovers of music. The Baud rendered very soulfully, a. meditation entitled .’ ‘.‘The Souls \ wakening,” and the masterly, manner in which it was played gave evidence that bandmaster Hawkey had made himself very conversant with the comroser’st mind when he composed ttio select if) n, and also that the bandsmen had given a good deal of attention to practice. Bandsman Hav hail again to accede to quite a number of encore, requests, and rendered another .cornet solo, this time with the "whole Band as an accompaniment. The whole .series of meetings were, an unbounded success, -and those who have been acquainted witn the-1 imam Band for mariv 'years assert that bandmaster -Hawkey--now has. the Band at a greater, degree of efhcieney than at anv previous time in its history.
