EXCITING RUNAWAY.
ON AVATHI BEACH. By Telegraph—Press Association. -WATHI, April G. An exciting runaway occurred on the Waihi Beach on Sunday, in which a woman and child had a narrow escape from being killed. Robert Mitchell, a Public Works employee, was proceeding on a motor cycle from the main beach road on to Hie sand, when the hack wheel struck a Jnrgo stone, the impact jolting the hack lever out. Immediately the cycle swerved, reared up on the hack wheel, and" dashed with terrific speed in the direction of a groan of holiday makers. Boeing that, tlie vehicle . had run amok, the crowd scattered in. all directions.
However, a married woman, Mrs J. J. Fox, was knocked down, and a year old daughter of Claud Capper, met a similar fate.
Tho latter’s life was saved by the rider throwing the machine on the side just betore the impact occurred. Mitchell was pinned beneath the machine and suffered severe injuries to his foot. Tho injuries to all parties were aj> tended by a doctor w v bo 'happened" to be oil the heaefi.
