DOMINION IMPORTS.
Turning' to’ tlie oilier side of the ledger, the latest statistic.* indicate an increase during February in tlie value, of numerous items of imports compared with the same period in 1925. It. has never been suggested, of course, that a young and developing country like New Zealand would have fewer wants to liil as the Dominion progressed and sustained prosperity overflowed into the lives of all sections of the community, but there is a feeling
taking shape in the minds b.. thoughtful observers that a long spell of prosperity may tempt the people to risk trouble by attempting to live boyoiul :heir means. In any case the' following comparative table of imports lor February, 1925 ami 1926, makes interesting’ reading in view of tno serious decline in the value of the Dominion’s exports for the earlier month® of the year : , Imports. Feb. Feb.
Steadily the flow of importations lias increased in volume. Viewed from all angles the some conclusion is forced upon the cautious observer. There' wits a slight increase in February compared with the corresponding month last, year, while during the twelve months ended February importations showed an increase over 1 the calendar year which closed in December. The comparative table published above makes interesting reading and although a superficial examination of the list may not enable a reasoned conclusion being made oil tlie moot point as to where utility ends and extravagance begins, it is safe to say that very large sums of money are being devoted to the purchase oversea of, very often, foreign manufactures, which might be more Usefully employed in the development. of the Dominion’s secondary industries.
