WAIMATE SPORTS MEETING.

FRIENDLY SOCIETIES’ GATHERING.

AN ENJOYABLE FIXTURE. OFFICIALS: President, Mr AV. F. George; vicepresident, Mr J. V. Riach; superintendent, Mr L. C. 31cLauchlan; hon. treasurer, Mr AV. G v Paulstarter, Mr F. .Kennard; record secretary, Mr J. V. Riach; assistant'record secretary, Mr J. Dempsey. Mr R. F. Algie carried out .the.onerous duties of secretary to' the entire satisfaction of all concerned.

Regarded as one of the most popular of the Easter fixtures, the AVaimate Friendly Societies’ annual sports meeting, which was held under ideal conditions at A 7 ictoria Park, A\ r aimate, on Saturday afternoon, proved well up to the high standard set in former years. Despite the strong .counterattraction provided by the Dunedin Exhibition, there was a very satisfactory attendance, and with good entries and excellent performances in all sections, a most enjoyable day's outing was provided. In the running and cycling sections very interesting sport was witnessed, good finishes being a. particular feature of the day. The field events, and music and dancing sections wore also well patronised, and with the results obtained from their efforts, tho officials and all concerned must feci highly gratified. The general arrangements, particularly those relating to tho grounds, left little to be desired, while a well-controlled organisation was also responsible for an uninterrupted programme, which was maintained well up to schedule time.

The cycling events produced some particularly good finishes, and' very interesting racing was seen. The final of the half mile, which was fought out in the closing stages between Bright) Fitzgerald and Underwood, proved particularly so, Bright getting half a wheel in front of the latter after a splendid spurt down the straight. The same conditions also prevailed in the'two mile event, when Fitzgerald and Willmott, coming through at the bend and finishing with a sharp burst, headed Ward a few yards from home. The mile was also very keenly disputed, tho winner turning up in F. Flanagan, off 80 yards. Bright, the winner of the half mile, who quickly rode up to the leaders from the 35 yard mark, was also going handy at tho entrance to the final stretch, but a fine sprint by tlie inside man proved half a wheel better. A bad spill, which resulted in Ward, Flanagan and Chamberlain rccc-iving heavy falls, at the commencement of the first lap, rather spoilt the final event, but never-the-less, Fitzgerald, Carey and Wells, riding almost abreast down the straight, provided a finish well up to the high standard of the previous events.

In tho running events, double wins wore secured by both Simpson and Polaschek, the former accounting for the two amateur distance races, tho half and the mile, very much ns he pleased, while Polaschek was successful in annexing both tho 880 and 440 in the cash events. In the former event Polaschek was strongly challenged by the veteran AY. J. AA’ild, who made a determined but unsuccessful effort after holding a prominent position throughout. Polaschek also ran third to L. C. Yeiteh and Atkinson in the 120 yard handicap. inches only separating the placed men. A r eitch and Atkinson were equally consistent. In addition to running first and second respectively in tho 120 yards handicap, these runners also finished-..in tho same position in the final of the 220; in both cases, the narrowest; of margins separated them. Tii the rriild' handicap, Tate, from the i scratchv mark, ran a

v»ry good second, just failing to head O’ Brian, after a splendid race. Results were as follows :
