THE TOWN BOARD.

(From Our Own Correspondent). The monthly meeting'"was held In the board’s office. Present: Messrs M. Maze (chairman), H. Friel, G. Crozier, H. Christie and G. Saunders. The chairman read the resolutions to be passed in connection with the loan to be raised for the carrying out of the sanitary scheme. The proposals were unanimously carried. ■ " ' ...... The chairman also stated that he hoped householders would prepare for the service by arranging their outhouses so as to accommodate a pan 20in. wide. The service would commence on May 1. The chairman reported upon the meeting that he had attended in connection with heavy traffic licenses at Timaru. . .... Members were of opinion that traction haulers should be on the same footing as motor haulers, and should pay licenses. Mr Saunders was deputed to make enquiries regarding the matter. Correspondence was read from the Minister of Internal Affairs re motor regulations. From the South Canterbury Hospital Board asking the local bodies to find work for certain cases of applicants. . It was decided to fall in with the wish of the Board as far as possible. Mr John A. Smith wrote asking asking permission to level the roadside.- —Granted, subject to Works Committee’s approval of work. The Mackenzie County Council wrote forwarding the Board’s quota of heavy traffic licenses (£1 16s 8d). , „ Members expressed disapproval of the amount received, seeing that so much traffic in the service cars and lorries passes through the township. It was decided that the clerk should write asking for further particulars. The Ashburton County Council wrote forwarding their quota (one penny). (Laughter.) The foreman’s report was read and adopted. . Mr Saunders reported on the visit of the Power Board’s eugincer io the township. With Mr Christie and fee foreman he had gone round the township with the engineer with a view to selecting a suitable place for the poles, and to decide where the lights should go. He also reported upon the Lighting Committee’s visit to Temuka to inspect .the lighting. Considerable discussion ensued as to the best places to have the lights. The chairman was deputed to see the Board’s solicitors to ascertain if a lighting area could be defined, omitting the farms in the town district, on which a. lighting rate of l-8d in the pound could be struck. The Lighting Committee were instructed to make a further inspection and report to next meeting, with an increased number of lights. Accounts, amounting to £SO, were ’ passed for payment. Night soil scheme. —Tenders were received for erection of shed and appliances from W. Wilson and A. L. Thoreau. The Board decided to accept Mr Wilson's tender. Fourteen applications were received for the’Position of sanitary inspector and surfaceman. After lengthy consideration the applicants were reduced to three, and as a result of a ballot Mr Wilkins was appointed. SCHOOL COMMITTEE. Batchelor, Rev. Falconer, and Messrs Maze, Oborn (chairman), and Wakefield (secretary). A letter was received from the West School, Timaru, expressing their committee’s appreciation of the members’ kindness at their recent picnic. It was decided to have four educational photos framed at a cost of £2 ss. airs Batchelor and the secretary reported upon their visit to dental Nurse Cato’s welcome at Temuka. It was decided that Mr Crossman represent the committee upon the Advisory Committee at Temuka. * Messrs Maze and Falconer proposed that the chairman and secretary wait upon the Technical Board, and endeavour to secure the use of a room for a dental clinic. This was unanimously carried. The headmaster reported that the attendance had been satisfactory during the month. A request was made for a basketball and a football for the winter games. The request was granted. The chairman and Mr Wilkins reported upon the scholars’ visit to Dunedin. Both spoke highly of the treatment received at Dunedin. Batchelor, and Miss Maze, had rendered splendid service in looking after the welfare of the girls. Mr AV. Gibb had organised a Ladies’ Committee in Timaru, which had supplied all the Fairlie line section with refreshments both on the outward and homeward journeys.

The secretary was instructed to write and express the committee’s apjireciation of Mr Gibb’s and the Ladies’ Committee's kindly actions. It was decided to instruct the caretaker to have the fires ready for use from April 20. The matter of an electric pump and a heating system were left to the incoming committee to discuss. Mr Wakefield was appointed visitor lor the month. Accounts, amounting to £S Ss, were passed for payment.
