HIGHWAYS BOARD.
DISSATISFACTION IN OTAGO. By Telegraph—Press Association. DUNEDIN, March 31, General dissatisfaction with the manner in which provisions of the Main Highways Act are being applied in the Otago districts was expressed at a conference yesterday, comprising of delegates from all County Councils in .the Province exeexhing Vincent, the Otago Expansion League and the Otago Motor Club. Tite conference criticised many features of the Hoard’s administration, and discussed fully the question of tfie amount at credit of tho South Island in the Board’s fund,, as well as tlio relations between County Councils and other bodies under the Act. Tli e following resolutions were carried : That .this meeting is in favour of one representative from Borough Councils being apliointed to the district Councils. That the Main Highways Board he asked to grant a subsidy of £2 for £1 in place of the present £1 for £1 subsidy for the construction and maintenance of highways. That the Board he asked to consider purchasing road making machinery in the best markets for disposal to local bodies at cost liriee, preference to be given to British manufacturers. That tho provisions of the Act ho altered so that a subsidy for the,maintenance of bridges on main highways be not loss than £2 for £l. A further resolution, “That in the opinion of ibis conference, the maintenance of main highways should ho a charge on a general rate” was r.ot put us many delegates, though favouring it, w«wo tied by the bodies they rexirosented.
