RESUMING WORK IN SYDNEY.
Decision Of Seamen. VICTORY FOR SHIPOWNERS. • • ■ By Cable—Press Association —Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. SYDNEY, March 31. The decision of tho seamen to resume work on the coastal vessels constitutes a victory lor the owners. Tile strikers will have to wait until vacancies occur in t'he crews heioro they can re-enter the service. Tho decision caused surprise in shipping circles, as the seamen had emphatically stated at tho beginning of the strike that thev would not resume fluty until the owners had dispensed with the services of the volunteers. ; Tho seamen have also decided to lift the “black” embargo placed on the vessels of the Newcastle and Hunter River Company. It is expected that the waterside workers will also declare the strike off at- the weekly meeting to-day. ULTIMATUM BY OWNERS. GUARANTEES DEMANDED OF SEAMEN. By Cable—Press Association —Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. ■ (Received March 31, 11 p.m.) SYDNEY", March .31. The coastal shipowners announce that although the seamen have declared the strike oft", the dispute still exists so far as the owners are concerned. The seamen have only considered themselves in deciding to return to work. The owners must have some guarantee of continuity of service from the men, otherwise matters stood just as they had been before the strike, and the owners would insist on the formation of a new Seamen's Union, embracing the volunteers at present working on ships, with an Executive altogether disconnected with the Federated Union.
