An important decision was given by Mr Justice Adams this morning, when he allowed the appeal against the decision of the Magistrate, and held that Eva Lilly Low, wife of the licensee of the Wellington Hotel, did supply liquor illegally after hours to men claimed to' be bona fide guests. The Judge said that the section under which the information was laid prohibited the supply of liquor by any person other than the licensee, and the word “supply,” included, gratuitous supply or gilt, and Mrs Low was a person other than the licensee. ALLEGED THEFT. By Telegraph—Press Awsoclation GREYMOUTH, March 31. Bert Sommerv.lje JS'eiper, ex-manager of the Greymouth Branch of Messrs Wilson and Conham, was charged this morning at the Magistrate’s Court' with the theft of £5, the property of tire firm. He was remanded till April 7. Bail was granted, self in £250 and one surety of £250. Other charges are pending, about £760 being involved. YOUNG DELINQUENTS. No fewer than seven lads, whose ages range from 19 to 21 years, all born in New Zealand, were sentenced ihis morning to various terms of reformative treatment by Mr Justice Adams, who commented strongly on the array of ■ young New Zealand criminals, saying it was very deplorable. Michael Quinlan (38), suspected for some time of being an opium dealer, wns seen last night entering a Chinaman’s shop by a constable. He denied having any opium, but a search produced four tins in his pockets. To-day Quinlan wns fined £4O for being illegally in possession of opium, in default six weeks’ imprisonment. CLAIM AND COUNTER-CLAIM. By Trlerraph—A*BoHat!on. WELLINGTON, March 31. Mr Page, S.M.. delivered reserved judgment to-dav in the ease in which Henry Maxwell, commission agent, claimed £97 32s 6d. from Evelyn Cowan, widow, of Wellington, alleged to have been lent to her by him. Mrs Cowan counter-claimed for £99 17s, which she said was owing to her for board, provided to plaintiff and his son and daughter.
It was stated at the hearing that the parties were engaged to be married, and that Maxwell, who lived at Napier. made frequent visits U> defendant's home in. Wellington. . .Two of-his-children also .stayed with Mm Cowiki, one for four months continuously." l ,; •The Magistrate held that plaintiff had established his claim to £6o 0s sd. The remainder of rhe amount claimed by him could he regarded as a gift to the home of the Cowans. _Mrs Cowan had proved, her claim to £SB l-. 55, Jeuving a balance in favour of plaintiff-of £0 7s sd, to which he was entitled' to judgment. No order was made for costs. On the application of Mr Mazengarb (tor plaintiff) .security lor an appeal. was lixed at £ls 15s. MAINTENANCE CLAIM. II y Telegraph—Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, March 31. An application tor an issue of a maintenance claim against Ellen Catherine Rainbow, aged 71, in respect 3 of ber husband, William Rainbow, aged 85, came before the Magistrate’s Court to-dav. Defendant denied that she,\vas worth £2400. and sa.itl she had taken rooms a ml.'offered" her husband a home. The latter, who was l.ving with’ aj granddaughter, refused to , iive "With’ his wile. In reply to the maintenance officer, defendant said she would not pay maintenance. She would go to prison rather than pay. The ease was adjourned for a week, to allow application for a charging order.
