TEAIUKA DENTAL CLINIC. Air J.. L. Saunders, acting director of tho division of dental hygiene, visited Temuka on Tuesday afternoon to make his first inspection of the local clinic. He was met at the station by the chairman and secretary of the school committee, Alessrs A. E. Smith and G. H. Clements, who accompanied the director to the surgery where Nurso Cator was hard at work. After making a thorough inspection. Air Saunders expressed his satisfaction. that the work was proceeding, and said that the surgery was excellently situated and that lie was thoroughly satisfied with the fittings and equipment. He was specially pleased with the lighting, and said that in this respect it was easily tlie best room he had seen. In reply to questions, Air Saunders said that neither the Department nor the Government contributed towards the cost of conveying i%p children from outside schools to the surgery. Tho school in question would have to provide its own transport. 7’he Department also preferred centralising tho work as much as possible, as it kept tho nurse more fully occupied and no time was wasted in travelling to sub-bases. Only the children in the primer classes will bo dealt with, and they would be followed up right through the standards. A period of six months would elapse between the first treatment. and tho second, and the school committee would be we’l advised to he careful that tho nurse he not given too many first attention children, as the second treatment was the most important and most lasting. Nurso Cato stated that there were 73 children at present under treatment or waiting to be treated, and about 20 parents had vet to send their consent forms. She had addressed a meeting of mothers, which had been well attended, and after they had inspected the surgery they were all well pleased with the work. If the mothers and parents generally would take an intelligent interest in tho clinic, it would greatly decrease the work of both the nurse and the Department. Prior to leaving, Air Saunders congratulated tho committee on the enthusiastic manner in which they had established such an excellent clinic. This .was the first in South Canterbury, and he was more than pleased with the result, and ho could assure the committee that the district could roly ov tho Department giving tho clinic evetf?) assistance.
