OBITUARY.

HERBERT .AYESTMACOTT.. Mr Herbert AYostmacott, who died on Sunday, at Nile Street, Tiniaru, in his 84th year, was the third son of thii Rev. Horatio AVestinacott, Vicar of Chastleton, Oxfordshire, and grandson of Sir Richard Wcstmacott, R.A., the eminent sculptor. The lute Mr AVestinacott went to sea at any early ■age, but owing to illness contracted in Judin, abandoned it for health reasons. Remaining in England, he passed his examinations for the Army, and was appointed to the 25th Regiment. A prolonged peace appearing to be in prospect, lie gave up the idea or being a soldier, ‘ and having' read Weld’s “Sheepfarming in New Zealand',’’ came out to this country. His tutor, whilst studying lor tin Army, was the Rev. Alfred Bishop, lather of the late Air Bishop, 5.M.,, of Christchurch, who find coached many young men for the service, and whoso influence for good showed in their after lives. He landed in the colony in 1862, taking part in the gold rush up the Dunstun. He next went to Rollesbv, in die Mackenzie Country, after which lie was appointed manager, first of “Stonyhurst,” then of “Flaxbtmie” (now known as AA’ard), by Sir Frederick Weld, and remai ncd with the firm of Clifford and Weld in that capacity for over twenty years-. After a. period in England, lie married Miss De l’ree. Mo was then engaged for some years buying and shipping horses from New Zealand lor the British Cavalry in India. He was one of the original AVaikakahi settlers, drawing at the ballot in 1899, the grazing run, now belonging to Captain Hennessey, known as “Garryowon,” where lie remained until fourteen years . later, when lie retired to live in liumu. He was born and, bred in the Heythrop couutrv, and loved hunting and hounds, being regarded as one of the best judges of a horse in New Zealand. In conjunction with the late Messrs Rat Campbell and H. 1 . Hill, he bred several good thoroughbred horses. in 1881, he won the Canterbury Derby with The Dauphin ami bred busilade, who won the New Zealand Cup.m 1880 The late Mr Wcstmacott imported several Arab horses from India, amongst them being Kircassm, winner of the Poona Derby. .He was a good whip, when such things wore valued and drove tandem until his retirement from AA’aikakahi. . , ~ The late -Ah' AVestinacott had thieo children, and is survived by lus widow and a grown-up son and daughtei.
