Craigie, M.2j.C., came to Tiniaru from AVellingtou yesterday. Mr Richard AA’eddcrsijpon. left Timaru by car yesterday for Christchurch, where lie will in. future reside. ' Mr E. C. Cliffin, local secretary of the Y.M.C.A., left Tiniaru yesterday lor a visit- to Auckland.
Messrs Cartwright, .Tass, Hay, and Amrott left Tiniaru yesterday for Auckland, to attend tlie annual conference of the Orange. Grand Lodges. Mi- AVcst, district traffic .manager, New Zealand Railways, left Timaru yesterday by the first express tor Dunedin. Mr L. E. Finch lias acquired the legal practice of Alcssrs Perry. Ivin-, nernev and Kindi, and will carry on the same with .Air A: L. Hudson’, under the style of Messrs Perry; -Finch-and Hudson. Their Excellencies Sir Charles, and Lady Alice Kergusson arc now on an extended visit to . Palmerston North and district. They spent a day in visiting the primary and secondary schools, at each of which the GovernorGeneral delivered a short address. To-dav their Excellencies will visit Flock House, where sons of Lntisli seamen are being trained as farmers.
Colonel C. Knott, the new Chief Secret arv for the Salvation Army in New Zealand, arrived at Auckland by the Aorangi. accompanied by Mrs Knott, 'file Colonel was formerly Chief Secretary for the Army’s Western Canadian district. For cloven years prior to going to Canada he was m Denmark, in 1905 he pioneered the Armv's work to Jerusalem and Egypt, and 'some vea'rs ago was in charge on the island’ of Ceylon. Tic was chaplain to the British expeditionary forces during the war, and in recognition of these services was made honoiaiv chaplain to His Alajesty's Jo roes. As Chief Seerc-tarv. Colonel Kliott is the hi,••host Salvation Army officer in tao Dominion next to Commissioner Hogganl.
At the Grosvenor Hotel last night ■ a farewell dinner was tendered to Mr AV Thomas. M.A.. Rector of the Timaru Bovs' High School, by members of the High School Board of Governors, prior to his departure, oil a visit to the Homeland. America and the Continent. The chairman of the Board ~ ( Air .T. Bitehener, M.P.), presided." and other members of the Board present were Alrs.B. 11. Low, Airs AA'. Ravmond. Messrs L. J. Alc"(lregor, AV. D. Revell, AV. D. Campbell, IT. 11. Fraser, J. G. Gow, J. Lvon, S. Mason and Dr. L. S. Talbot. After the dinner there were speeches, in which very complimentary reference was made to Mr Thomas’s success in building up the High School, and ho was wished a pleasant voyage and a speedy return. Mr and . Mrs Thomas were each presented with a suitable parting gift, and Mr Thomas, in a happy reply, returned thanks l’or the gifts and for the kindly sentiments bv which they were accompanied. Ltd., has been appointed to the 'position ot general manager of the New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative Association of Canterbury, Ltd., in succession to Air AV. T. Ksson. who recently resigned on being appointed io a position on the inspectorate ol the New Zealand Loan and Alorcantile Agency Co.. Ltd. Mr Machin. wlio is forty-live years of age. was educated at Derby Grammar ,School, England,-and on leaving school was articled to a leading firm of accountants and auditors. During the war lie was prominently connected wit.i the wool and meat control organise.-, tions in Great Britain. In 1919 tie came out Irom England as New Zealand managed for Sims, Cooper and Co., and since then he has resided at Christchurch. He. has been prominently connected with public affairs in this city, and is 'president or the Canterbury. Chamber of Commerce and vice-president of the Associated Chambers of Commerce of New Zealand. lie is also chairman of (he Canlerhury Brovincial Committee or the Dunedin ’Exhibition, and has been president of the Christchurch Batepayors’ Association and vice-president ef the Canterbury Employers’ Association.
