(.From Our Own Correspondent)'. DRUIDS’ TUG-OF-WAR. The final of the Teniuka Druids’ tug-of-war contest took place in tho Drill Hall on Saturday evening, there being a very large crowd' present. The first contest was tho semi-final, between Hooper Bros., ltakaia (54st loib) and Hibernians (52st 71b), tlie heavier team winning by several inches.' Then came the final in the heavyweight section, between ' Timaru Veterans (57st -lib) and Druids 2ib). Tlie local team were giving away five stone. Tho Timaruvians oxterted themselves in the last two minutes, and won by five inches. Tho winning team was composed of tho following : —J. Philip, 13st 21b ; T. Reily, list 21b; R. Boucher, list 101 b; \V. Campbell, list 71b; R. Campbell, lost lib. Tho last pull of the evening was the final in tho light-weights, between Timaru Rowing Club 55st, and Hooper Bros., 54st 131 b. The seaport boys sprang a surpriso on their opponents, as immediately the gong sounded they jumped away with a 3in. lead. Although the Rakaia men put in every ounce to extinguish the rod light, they could not budge the scullers, who had increased tlio gap to Gin. when the filial gong sounded. Tho winning team were: —W. Leaney (lOst 71b), 11. C. Guy (list 71b), E. Campbell (list), C. Knowles senr. (ICUt 31b), C. Knowles junr. (lOst 61b). During the evening ill- George l’ierco announced the winners of various competitions as follows: — Weight of lamb, Sirs F. South, 431 b: correct weight 43)11). Number of peas (Miss Stewart’s cake), Mr J. Baker. PLEASANT POINT STREET ' LIGHTING. On Thursday evening, three members of the Pleasant Point Town Board, Messrs Saunders; Friel and Christie, visited Temuka for the purpose of inspecting tho method adopted by Temuka in regard to the illumination of the town. They were met by tho Mayor (Mr G. B. Cartwright), and the Lighting Committee ' (Councillors A. H.'Eeun and D. White) who explained tho whole system, and later in the evening tho visitors were motored through the various streets in the town by the Mayor. T’lioy expressed themselves as being highly pleased with the system. They were particularly impressed by tho main street, wheVo high-powered lamps are suspended over the middle of tho road, and the Power Board’s system of illuminating tho shop fronts at night also met with the appreciation of the visitors.
BUILDING OUTLOOK. There is every indication that the. building trade in Tcmiika will be busier this winter than for many years past. Tho new Library, Rest and Blanket Room will be commenced shortly after Easter, and one local builder lias at least four contracts for rew bouses, to bo erected in the east end of the town. Other contractors have similar works on hand lor tno west end. Some of the material tor the open-air school is on the site, and tile erection of this building will ho commenced within tho next few weeks.
