VICE.
And Its Suppression.
STATE DEPARTMENTS CHARGED. By Cablo —Press Association —Copyright. Australian and N.Z, Cable AssocicMoy. (Received March 28, 5.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, March 20. The Society for the Suppression of Vice has published a report in which Magistrates’ Courts, newspapers ol the United States, the Post Office, and the Department of Justice are blamed for the deluge of indecent pictures and immoral literature which are flooding the country. The report charges die newspapers with being in favour of indecency, because they are mainly interested in profits and therefore do not wish to offend the largo amusement and pu b I icat io l i interests. It is alleged that persons have been acquitted, thereby emboldening producers to further indecencies. The Post Office fails to sift the published matter, thereby carrying much that is Corrupting and debased. The Department of Justice investigates salacious magazines only upon complaints after distribution, by which time the damage is done.
