AT AIR EH AU CLUB. SPORTS AT CALEDONIAN GROUNDS. There was an attendance of about SUU at the Caledonian Grounds on. Saturday, when the Alairehau Cycling Club (Christchurch) held a mooting. The fixture could not have been favoured with better weather, and with the track nowiy top-dressed and in the best of order, some good times wero registered. The 'fact that there was another meeting in Christchurch on Saturday evening was the reason for the absence of a good many Christchurch riders whose names figured on the programme, but all the handicap events were closely contested. Both the. Timaru and Christchurch officials who ran the sports arc to be congratulated on the success attained. The handicap events provided some good sport. Waid, who had a day out, won the first two races in convincing style, and was third in the local handicap. The mile and a half went to Willmott, who had a bit in reserve at tlie end, and scored a comfortable win, while the local event was annexed by K. Fitzgerald. The special features of the day wero the match races between the Christchurch crack, W. Alackie, and Alick Fitzgerald, of Victoria. Fitzgerald headed Mackie home in both races; in the first by a length, and in the second by six lengths. Mackie, previous to the first match, had endeavoured to lower the mile motor-paced record, and this was a big handicap in his match. Fitzgerald gave two sterling performances, nevertheless, and timed his sprint on both occasions to a nicety. During the afternoon Mackie made attempts to lower the mile, two miles, and five miles New Zealand motor-paced records. His first essay was marred by a soft tyro, after lie had traversed one lap in good time. Ho started going again, and kept close to the ro.ler all the way, hot failed to lower G. V. Tozer’s record, which was put up at Timaru in 1917, bv one second, the record being lmin 30scc. Alter doing one lap in the two miles, .Mackie again had to make a fresh start, this time liis wheel coming in contact with the edge of the roller, and being sent oil the coins*. He started off again, and after two miles had been done, continued another three without stopping. He failed to make any impression on the two mile record, which also is held by G. V. Tozcr, at 3min, • Mackie s time being 3min 11 3-ssec. He nas more successful in the- five miles, reducing .1, Fitzgerald’s record, which was put up at Timaru last year, by 46 3-sscc, Fitzgerald’s time being Sunn 57see. Later, Mackie made another attempt on the mile, but was again nil.successful, being 3 l-usec over the record. Results were as follows
