At the Bulls Police Court this morn-, ing, Erancis Thomas Durran ami Colin Edwards, described by the police as undesirables of the worst type, were lined £2O, or three months’ imprisonment, for the unlawful conversion of a; motor car. They were convicted and discharged for the theft of benzine. Durran, for using obscene language, was lined £'2o, or three months. After accused had been sentenced, Durran to nine months and Edvards to three, they appealed to the Bench for the option of a line, and the sentences wore amended as above. Both had had lists of previous convictions. BIRCHING HAS NO EFFECT. Bv Telejrnpli—Press Association. ASHBURTON, March 26. A boy of 14 years, one of several who recently received a birching lor thefts, was again beforo the Court to-day, charged with stealing chocolates from a shop. He was sent to the Wcraroa. training farm, the Magistrate remarking that it was somewhat unusual for a boy who had just been birched to come up again on a similar charge. A HOMELESS GIRL. By Telegraph—Press Association. INVERCARGILL, March 26. A girl of fourteen years was before the Court, charged with not having a homo or a settled place of abode. Tho police stated that the girl was one of a family of sixteen, and had been forced to leave home through the conj duct oil her father, who had several | times been in the asylum. The Magistrate adjourned the case fo r twelve months, the girl in the meantime to bo under the care of the probation officer. MOTORIST SENTENCED TO THREE WEEKS’ PRISON. By Telegraph—Press Association. HAWERA, March 26. Robert Henry Blaekmoro was charged at the Magistrate’s Court, l'atea, with being drunk while in charge of a cur on February 20tli, thereby causing a collision with a service car. Evidenco given hy eye-witnesses showed that the accident occurred on a wide straight road. Blaekmoro was driving on the wToug side, and cut into the aervicc ear, striking it on the lull side. Both cars were badly damaged. Five passengers in the service car and defendant all received injuries. Medical evidenco disclosed that Blaekmoro was in a state of intoxication. He was convicted, and sentenced to three weeks’ imp risoiitmmt.
