WAIMATE.
(From Om- Qn-ii Corvosnondent.) the Harvest. Most of the farmers in Waimate district are 'well advanced with their harvest, where operations have not already been concluded, and it is generally agreed that the wheat crop will be a heavy one. There arc many good tallies reported to date, and it is ox-, ported that tlie average will lie fairly high. The weather has been favourable to the progress' of the work, and there has been little delay. SCHOOL CHILDREN IN DUNEDIN.
Mr L. F. Pegler, headmaster .of the Waimate District High School, has telegraphed from Dunedin that the party of school children arc thoroughly enjoying the attractions of the ExIni.'turn. In all. there arc l()'l children and ten adults in the party, which comprises pupils of the town and rountry .schools. They expect to return to Waimate to-day (Friday). BOROUGH COUNCIL. The Waimate Borough Council met on Tuesday evening. Present —-The Mayor (Mr Geo; Dash), and Councillors W. G. Paul, T. Twomey, .1. B. Robinson, A. E. Lewis, J. Atwill, W. Nelson, H. Smith, S. Grut and F. Nash.
CORRESPONDENCE. The Prime Minister (Hon. J. G. Coates), in a circu'ar letter, stated that the Rockfeller Foundation made to the University College Hospital (Univei'sity of London) in 1923, a gift of £1,205,000 for. certain purposes conditions of the gift being that £'400,000 should be expended'* i pen- a building programme for the provision of ISO additional bods, inclusive of a new obstetric hospital. Committees were formed for the purpose of obtaining contributions for endowing beds, one to be named after each of the Overseas Dominions. The full endowment, £3OOO, has been raised by Australia, South Africa, and India, but only £B9B had been collected for the New Zealand bod, and an appeal was made now to the Dominion for the balance of the cost of endowing the New Zealand bed. The **ttci" asked for the Council’s cooperation in bringing the appeal before the public, and asked the Council to have subscription lists opened in the r Wouch On the motion of Councillor Unit it was- decided to vote £5, provided other municipalities voted an amount proportionately.. on a population basis. The Salvation Annv. per Captain Armstrong, wrote thanking the Council for the extra lighting placed in Queen Street, and invited ConneiUors to a lot*-' tui'o to bo given in the Hall on April 10th by Commissioner Hoggnrd. The Headquarters of the Salvation Army, Wellington, in reply to the Council’s letter, regarding thorn hedge •on Army property in Steward - and Shearman Streets, said it was hoped to , make an early inspection, with the object of meeting with the Council’s requirements. . I The .Department "of Internal' Affairs ; notified that motor drivers’ licenses could now be issued for next twelve months, and advised the Council to act accordingly'. The Town Clerk reported that lie had already advertised the .matter, and his action was approved. The Council being notified that Mr G. W. Collett’s term as the Council’s representative on the . High School Biard of Governors expired on 31st March, it was agreed to re-app'oint Mr Collett to the office. ■ Dash Ltd , wrote that some Vcais ago they had purchased a bubble fountain for erection in front, of their •'premises in limes Street. This had a tap also for filling car radiators. The letter asked permission to erect the fountain under the direction of the Council’s Works Committee. —The matter was referred to the Works Committee with power to have the fountain installed if thought advisable. A letter from the. Department of Internal Affairs relating to dangerous goods’ licenses, and one from Messrs Boland and Knell regarding an application for a kerbside petrol pump, wore deferred til! the next Council meeting for consideration.
Mr B. A. Betten’s application for a, water supply', for a dwelling on Mill Road was granted. RESERVES COMMITTEE. The Reserves Committee recommended :—• Caretaker. —That the Council advertise for a man to take on the duties of caretaker to Victoria Park as from the Ist May, and that a schedule of duties be drawn up to bo seen at the Town Clerk’s office, and that the remuneration be £2O yearly'. Sieo Street.—That steps be taken to close Sleo Street to vehicular traffic, and the roadway bn treated in a manner somewhat similar to Victoria Terraco. Transfer of Lease.—The goi-se having been cut and grubbed, tlie Reserves , Committee has no objection to tlio transfer of lease of Lot 6, D.P. 3146, from W. B. Freeman to j. W. Hallida.v. The clerk said lie had looked up earlier correspondence between tlie Borough, and the County Councils on the matter of closing Sleo Street, and at that time the County Council had no objection to Hie street being closed to vehicular traffic. The Mayor said the street was a good parking place, for cars when a gala was being held on Seddon Square, and for the cars of tenuis players. It was decided to close the street, and that steps be taken to bring this about. Relative to the matter of a. caretaker for Victoria'Park, Councillor Grut said he had passed the Park late one evening recently ■ and found two gates wide opmi. The gates were not even fastened back to stop them from swinging. Jt wns time something was (lone. The Mayor said the Council had paid .£l2 a. year for a caretaker for the. Park. If they added to his duties tlio cutting of the hedges and grubbing, and for these .services gave him £2O a .year in place of tlio £l2, that sum would he more worth his while. Councillor Atwill said the. work was at present costing £2B a year. Councillor Paul said the Council should draw up a schedule of duties, and then call for offers to do the work, the applicants to state the salary required. The report was adopted.
GEN'KBAL COM MITTEE. The General ami Lighting Committot! reported:— Elc-etric Lighting.—The street light agreed upon tor the use of the Salvation has been put in, and the additional light required in Gregson street would be installed within a. few days.—The committee agreed to grant the request of-the Power Board that the installation of two lights in Bacncourse Boad stand in abeyance until such time as the Board’s plant for erecting poles is again in IVsiimate. Kerbside Petrol Pumps.—An apnliration for permission to install a kerbside petrol pump was received, and the Town Clerk was instructed .to reply in terms of the resolution earned at the previous Council meeting. Silent Policeman.— Tn view of the great assistance the silent policeman has been in directing traffic, it was decided to procure another to be placed at some other intersection. Motor Signals.— The completion of motor signals agreed noon is well in hand, and the fixilig of same in their “groper positions was in the hands of his

The report was agreed to. Councillor Nash reported that with the Mayor and the - Railway Department’s inspector, a visit had been made to the box culvert, when it was found that the culvert had been, put in in accordance with ihe County jmi- ■ dnccr’s' pegs. The County Engineer had .vated that the, culvert was placed in the proper position. Councillor Nash also reported that it was advisable to continue through the iron fence between the hire Station and Rower Board’s property, and lie moved that the Power Board be written to and advised that the Council was agreeable to the completion of the fence providing the cost to the Council would not he more than £2 10s. Councillor Twome.v suggested shifting the present, street light in Dobson Street further along to the corner, when both Dobson Streot and North Street would bo benefitted, a-nil on his motion it was agreed that the General Committee ho asked to rejrort on the lighting of North and Dobson Streets.

Petitions. — Two petitions had been received for a more adequate water supply, one inside and one outside the ; Borough. The Town Clerk had been asked to measure the distance between the termination of the present. Gin. main and the Racecourse, and estimate the cost of laying a 3in main to th'.'.t point. General accounts amounting to £336 9s 7d were passed for payment. 'lhe Mayor said this was the last pay out of the financial year. When those accounts were paid, the Council would have no liability that they knew of with the exception .of the cost of tlio plans for the abattoirs, which they had not allowed for. The Council had the money with which to pay it. Ho thought they would end the financial year very happily. OTHER BUSINESS The Mayor brought, up the .matter rC icnde" the pietur at Kelcy’s Busli at Easter to members of the Tiniani .1 joi..ugii Council, but owing to the fact that a number of Councillors would be absent from Waimate at that time, it was agreed to defer the matter. Regarding kerbing and channelling broken by the -Telegraph Department when removing poles, at the instance of Councillor Lewis, it was decided to write and ask the Department if it. was in favour of the Council doing the repair work at the expense of the Department. Relative to the removal of night soil from a dwelling i:i .Edward Street, in the drainage area, the matter was left in the hands of the Town Clerk to arrange with the contractor. Councillor Paul reported cases of cycle riding on footpaths, riding without lights, and of cattle being driven through Borough streets.
It was decided to draw the attention of the police to the excessive amount of footpath riding by cyclists. The Clerk reported that he had instructed the Gas Company to cut off the gas from all Borough lamps'. On the motion of Councillor Twomey the attention of the Works Committee was drawn to the necessity of providing better footpatli facilities to Knottingly Park. Councillor Twomey brought up the matter of gorsc growing on section in Dobson Street, and it was decided to draw the Crown Lands Department attention to the matter.
Council!;):' Paul said gorsc was growing on Dobson Street and the. Reserves Committee was instructed to attend to the matter.
It was agreed to notify the owner of the property at the corner of Parsonage Road and Queen Street that the hedge must be cut back. Couneil'or Paul re|)orted that cattle, were still grazing on Borough .streets. The Mavor said that when the schedule of duti l "'- for Borough employees was drawn u]>, the ranger would know definitely what his duties wero and the nuis.ineo might he obviated. He stressed tin' need for ]>roenring a site in the Borough for a pound.
