COASTAL STRIKE.
OWNERS’ CHALLENGE TO SEAMEN. By Cable —Press Association —Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. SYDNEY', March 25. Officials of the Seamen’s Union complain that iii connection with the coastal strike the owners have adopted an uncompromising attitude, having refused to disperse with the volunteers in favour of the strikers. The owners have demonstrated that they can run tlieir ships without the assistance of Unions, and during the recent conferences have impressed upon Union officials their independence In this respect, and in consequence a strong endeavour is being made by the Unions to evolve a means of bringing pressure upon the owners, in the hope that they will adopt a znore conciliatory attitude. It is authoritatively learnt that Union officials approached the Government, and asked it to reduce freights on coastal railways, in order to divert trade from the ship owners. It is understood that the Governnent gave no definite reply. Another -Union scheme is to precipitate a general hold-up of shipping, both coastal and inter-Slate.
