Tenders for shifting the Troopers' Memoual closed yesterday at the Borough Council, but as the tenders v ie much higher than anticipated, it has been decided to do the work by day labour, and to commence it at once.
Two men made a mistake this week by accosting a. detective in Wellington and asking him for money. In each instance the detective recognised them as men with previous convictions and promptly arrested them. The Magistiate, after listening to their record, characterised both as idlers and spongers,” and sent them to gaol for 12 months.—(Press Assn.)
A Wellington Press Association message says that the New Zealand Athletic Council lias accepted the offer of the Rowing and Tennis Associations to share in the proceeds of the art union they are launching. A Press Association message from Whaiigurei says that Captain W. R. Patterson left yesterday afternoon on a cruise, around New Zealand iu the new launch Rakanui, the first stage being to Wellington, via. the East Coast. It is anticipated that six weeks will be occupied in the journey. A party of seven are aboard.

The plantations are calculated to greatly beautify the already impressive features of the land-cape, and it is anticipated that in a few years Benapai will bo one of tlie most popular picnic resorts.
With pleasure and joy written all over their faces, about 70 boys from the Salvation Army Roys’ Home, Temuka, visited Tim nr u yesterday per motor bus for their annual picnic on Caroline Ray. It was fortunate that the weather was all that could he desired, and also pleasing that the children spent such a happy time. A band of willing Timaru ladies had everything ready for their refreshment on arrival, and after a fine lunch, atwhich full justice was done to all tho good things provided, the children, under their ollicers, set out to thoroughly enjoy themselves. Races and games occupied a great deal ot attention, and tho ice cream churn lmd a great number of adherents. Alter* a .sumptuous tea, tlie children leit lor homo in jubilant spirits.
