AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION SECRETARY. . By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, March 24. The secretary of tile Wellington Automobile Association was before t.he court, charged with exceeding 30 miles perhour on the Hutt road A constable who followed him said the defendant was doing 43 miles per hour. Defendant said that according to his rpcedometer he was doing just under 30, A few days before he had had the instrument tested, and found it was registering five or six miles less than it should. Counsel said it was a serious charge, because the defendant with other members of the committee, was always advising motorists not to exceed the speed limits. ■ Defendant had never broken the laws. I b“ Magistrate said he was prepared to accept the evidence that the speedo- I meter was not registering properly, but lie believed the constable, and it was hard to understand how a mail in defendant’s. position did not know tile difference between 30 and 40 miles. Defendant was convicted and ordered to pay costs.
