IN MEMORY OF THE BARD.
Shakespeare’s Memorial Theatre. WORLD-WIDE APPEAL. By Cable—Pres* Association—Copyright, Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received March 24, 7.50 p.m.) LONDON, March 24. The Shakespeare Memorial Theatre has launched a world-wide appeal for £250,000 to re-huild the burnt theatre, and provide a perpetual endowment. Mr Baldwin, Mr Ramsay MacDonald, and Lord Oxford, signed a letter to the Press of the world, pointing out that it had been possible to see eight different plays in a single week at the theatre, and the beneficial work was acknowledged by the King’s Grant of a Royal Charter. But a theatre that was adequate fifty years ago, was inadequate for spectators from all parts of the Empire, who attend the Shakespearian festivals.
Millions of Shakespearean lovers in the Dominions and the United States will he eager to help in rebuilding the theatre on a worthy scale.
