SPORTING.

OAMARU JOCKEY CLUB. AUTUMN FIXTURE CONCLUDED. Vastly improved weather conditions favoured the second day of the Oanviru Jockey Chib's iuituinn mooting. The morning broke clear, and although there was a bite in the air until the middle of the forenoon, the afternoon •was lino and mild. The attendance, however, was only moderate, and the totalisator turnover for the day, £BBll5 ; 10s, showed a considerable shrinkage | compared with £111,885 put through on : the second day of last autjumi meeting. 1 The second day in 1925, however, was a public holiday. The turnover for the meeting was £19,085, compared with £24,904 10s a year ago. The track was in surprisingly good order considering the quantity of rain that fell on the previous night. There seemed to j be a soft strip near the rails in the I straight, and it was noticeable that not ! one horse succeeded which had the in- ! side running through the dip. The chief event proved a very unsatisfactory affair, two of the five starters getting hung up in the harrier. The starter’s explanation was that he had put now blocks into the machine, and that these failed to work. It was evident that the three horses which got away broke through the- tape, and some bystanders asserted that this was caused through the official ea'ling “look out,” ■ before he pulled the lever. Wherever 1 the fault lay, the incident spoiled the 1 contest.

KAPUNA DOWNS FAVOURITES. Whnrnelilfe was backed down to a ridiculously small price in the Pacific Hurdles, with Coastguard in a little better request than Kapunn. April Showers, the outsider, ■■all ied only fifty shillings. His Majesty. Kapuna and April Showers rtuy together till the second fence, where Kapuna outjumped the other pair and opened up a lead of half a dozen lengths from His Majesty. Wharncliffe jumped into second place at the seven furlongs post, and at the six furlongs the favourite and Coastguard were together some lengths behind Kapuna. Kapuna led round the bend and through the dip, and won by four lengths from Coastguard, who heat Wharncliffe by throe lengths. Mandrake was a fair fourth. Kapuna had benefitted by his experience on the . first dav, and jumped better than j either Coastguard or Wharncliffe. The ! track was very heavy near the rai's in j the straight, and Wharncliffe’s prospoets were not iinnroved by being kept on the inside. The rider of Kapuna picked a much drier course. This was ! only the winner’s essay over the sticks, and the half-brother to Jack Symons looks a promising aspirant to honours in this department. Coastguard jumped better than in his two previous races, but is far from a proficient fencer.

A LIKELY STAYER. The English mare Oalcile, who bad finished very strongly on the previous dav, had only four opponent:! in the Trial Plate, and was backed down to a. Prohibitive figure. Royal Reel was fast one, and led round the bend from Moratorium, the favourite being handy in third position. Moratorium supplanted Royal Reel in the dip but could not respond to a challenge from Cnlcite, who, after being stirred i p at the foot of the Ill'll, came away to win by two lengths. Royal Reel "’as third, four lengths back, and Kiliroa was fourth Caleitc is troubled by soreness, hut she conies of a staving strain, and if she shakes off her ailment, is likely to. win more races. She is not. an attractive mover, but her action does not appear to toll against her when once warmed up.

BTG RACE MARRED. The Rucldey Memorial proved something of a fiasco, owing to an unfortunate incident at the start. The Cheat was instated a sound favourite, with Mantua carrying most of the remaining money, 'Courtly Rose, and The Cheat were moving about ,a hit, but when a fair line was secured, The Cheat and Roman Archer 'jumped out just in front of Scion. The other pair,. Mantua (on the inside) and Courtly Rose (wide out), were left standing, both being entangled in the tapes. When the three 'actual : starters had settled down, Roman Archer was loading from The Cheat, with Scion throe or four lengths hack, and Mantua starting on a quite hopeless chase of the field. Roman Archer led The Cheat along the hack, with Scion, who had been tailed right off on the previous day, very close up. The Cheat went to the front at the bend, but Roman Archer took charge again in the dip, -and drew out to win by three lengths from The Cheat, who was two lengths in front of Scion. The named displayed surprising improvement on his first day’s form, and could have been nearer The Cheat .had he been ridden out. The stewards inquired into the incident at the start, and accepted the starter’s explanation that the barrier failed to act. The winner, who paid a handsome dividend, is an Aus-tralian-bred gelding owned by. MV A. H. Fisher, and is bred on stout lines. Ivs dam being a close relative of two Melbourne Cup winners. The Client failed to perform up to expectations, and apparently is not at home under we’ght. With an equitable despatch, it is probab'e that Mantua would have won.

A GOOD ONE FROM THE SOUTH. There was good support for six of the eleven starters in the Western Trot. The previous day’s winner, Tennessee’s Child, wound up favourite, with His Majesty and Day Pointer disputing second position on the machine. Tennessee’s Child upset her driver and got away, but was caught by a wellknown Washdyke trainer and was got back to the .starting point in time. Jean McKinney, Sadie Hiion and Kinney Dillon threw away their chances by refusing to leave in time. Imperial Logan led off from Mammon and Fairy Chimes, and at the back was well clear of Mammon. Just after passing the six furlong post, Imperial Logan was joined by Tennessee's Child, and the pair ran round the bend, followed by His Majesty, Ma ninion and Day Pointer. Tennessee's Child was first into the straight and won very easily by four lengths from Imperial Logan, who beat His Majesty by three lengths. Then came Day Pointer and Mammon, the lot behind the winner being very tired. Tennessee's Child paced smoothly all through, and his performance was rather impressive. Ruby Carbine, who began rather slowly, was putting in a good run up the back in company with Tennessee’s Child, when she spoiled her chance of a place by a break.

ZARAGOZA AGAIN. Zaragoza was the popular pick for tho Anniversary Welter, Rob and Frivolous being evenly backed and carrying about £SO each less than the Nassau marc. Zaragoza and Rob were first to show out, but Zaragoza was soon beaded, and at the eiul of a lurlong Rob and All Stylo were together in front. Tilts pair ran round the bend three lengths clear of Tione and Frivolous. The field closed up at the dip, where Zaragoza drew up to A'l Style, and Frivolous also made a move. A good finish ended in Zaragoza defeating All Style by half a length, with Frivolous a. short length away. Snatsher was taken all over the place in. the last furlong, and had he been kept on the outside, would have troubled the winner. As it was he was a close fourth. alter being hopelessly shut in. Frivolous was slow to move, and after making up her leeway, got into bother at the foot of the hill.

PINK NOTE’S GOOD FINISH. Speculation was more spirited on the Windsor Handicap. Black Duke topped the thousand mark, Reccu.pt and Pink Note being next in demand, with gaps of two hundred between them. Black Duke, Fairy Tidings and Pink Note were quickest to begin, and at the bend the Duke, and Fairy Tidings were showing daylight from Silver Lining, Pink Note having dropped back to last. In the dip Fairy Tidings, Exide, Black Duke and Receipt were hard at it with Pink Note being vigorously ridden at the rear. Receipt took charge at tho distance, but a hit further on Pink Note ranged alongside and won decisively by a length. E.xide, Silver Lining and B’aek Duke were practically in lino five or six lengths back. Black Duke, who had to he ridden to hold his place in the soft going, appeared to be a trifle unlucky, and Receipt mav have put in .her run a shade too soon,' but it is doubtful if anything cou Id have beaten Pink Note. The latter had to be driven along to hold his place in the intermediate stage, but was running over his opponents at tho hill.

A BIG DIVIDEND. J. Grico’s stable provided the favourite for tile saddle trot, Royal Locanda carrying £l5O more than Pretty Pointer. Morvou Lass and Patch Junior made the early running, ironi Royal Locanda, Minimax, Ruby Carbine and Bon Lou. Before reaching the five furlong peg Royal Locanda and Bou Lou had taken <:lmrge from Ruhv Carbine and Miuimax. In the gully Ruby Carbine joined the leading pair, and soon taking I heir measure, came away to win by five lengths from Royal Locanda. Stan Rilkes was e ’d lengths away,, attended by Bon . .!• Pandora, and Pretty Pointer. Throgmorton stood on the mark, and Gilt ol Song broke up early. The winner, who hails from the Kurow district, paid a. very large dividend. F. G. Holmes infused plenty of vigour into Hits riding of Royal Locanda, hut the Ashburton gelding seems to be many removes from a champion, and was Lilly extended to secure sceoiul place.

VOLANT DOWNS THE FAVOURITE. Corn Money and Murilump:) dominated the market on the Electric Handicap, the former being about £IOO the better favourite. At the end ol a lurlong, Dancing Days and Corn Money were showing clear ol Clontarf, and there was not much change until three furlongs from home. Corn Money was then leading from Dancing Days, but in the dip "Volant moved up, and breasting the rise, was not far behind Corn Money. The Orari gelding finished the stronger, and lie won by a nock from the favourite, with Dancing Days nearly two lengths away. Muriluuipo was a fair fourth. Volant is a smart gal’opcr when t >■ conditions suit him, and can be expected to do his owner further service alien the going is sound. Coni Money did not altogether please when doing his preliminary, and possible was feeling the efiects of liis race on the previous day.
