MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

4IONDAY, MARCH 22. (Before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M.); DRUNKENNESS. Peter, Cavanagh, a. second ofiender for drunkofiness, was convicted and finfkl ■ 20s, in default •48 hours’ imprisonment. A first offender 'was fined 10s, m default 24 hours’ ■ imprisonment. REMANDED. Charles Peter Clancy, a native of Scotland, aged 40 years, and Leonard Charles Haskell, a native of England, aged 21 years, were charged with attempting to break into the premises of Alston’s, Ltd. and J. Soutor’s with intent to commit a crime.

Senior Sergeant Eahey that two men were seen attempting to force a window at tho rear of Mr Sonter’s premises, and from tho description given to Constable McClelland the tw;o accused were arrested at half-past nine on Sunday evening by Constable McClelland and Detective Walker and charged with tho offence. They were also charged with attempting to force a hack door at 'the premises of Alston’s, Ltd. On tho application of the police a remand was granted until tho 29th to permit of further inquiries being made. An application from the accused Clancy for bail was granted in one sum of £IOO and one .surety of £IOO.
