CHAMPION OF CHAMPION DOUBLES. AVON BY TEMUKA. The final of the S.C.B.C. Champion of Champion Doubles was played on the Park green oil Saturday between M. .McCallum (lead), and I. Edwards (skip), . Tomuka, and E. Cornwall (lead); and J. Latimer (skip) West End. The game was a hard fought one and close throughout, all loui players . doing their utmost to win. Temuka won by two points, the final score being, Temuka 20, West, End 18. Whatever luck there was in.the game, seemed to be in Teniuka’s favour, but they deserved the win by tlieir steady consistent play. During tho first few heads Cornwall had the upper hand, but McCallum soon found the green, and'was able to hold his own. Both leads played their usual sound game. There was not much margin between the play 'of the ;skips, and the filial majority of 2 for Edwards, just about indicated his ability to beat Latimer. TJp to the seventh head Latimer was in the lead, tho score then being 3—7 in West End’s favour, Temuka then caught up to, and passed his opponent, keeping the lead and eventually winning as stated. ■
SOUTH CANTERBURY RINKS CHAMPIONSHIP. WON BY WEST END. The finaVof the eight rink champion-, ship was played on the Park green on Saturday, when West End, winners of the Saturday section, met Tips'll, winners oj;. tile Thursday section, the former after an exceedingly close contest winning by 19 points, . The winners head tho Honours Board for 12 months, and are also first holders of tho “Leslie Gold Cup,” a beautiful cup donated by Mr A. Leslie for the 8 rink championship. The West End Club also received a miniature of the cup, presented In - Mrs Leslie. A silver kitty has been donated by Mrs Leslie also, but it has not yet arrived from England, and will be presented at future contests. At the close of the day’s play, Mr I. J. Bradley, president of the Centre, congratulated West End on their .meritorious win, and on behalf of South Canterbury bowler* expressed their thanks to Mr and Mrs Leslie for their gifts. Mr R. ASHBURY CLUB GALA. Tho Ashbury Club were favoured with fine weather for their gala, which was held at the green on Saturday. There had been such a number of such functions in connection with the Floral Fete that it was thought that tho public might be tiring of them, but this was far from the case on Saturday, when the large attendance entered into the spirit of the gala, and assured its success •in every way. In officially opening the function, the president (Mr B. Manning) thanked those present for their attendance, and hoped that everyone w T ould spend a pleasant time. Various games and competitions, and stalls, which were situated on various parts of the grounds, all came in for unstinted patronage. The energetic committees which ran the event are to bo complimented on the success it was. ft was principally due to tho president (Mr B. Manning), the secretary (Mr V- Panton) and tho head of the ladies’ committee (Mrs J. It. Hawkes) and their willing helpers that the very satisfactory sum. of £9O was realised on tho day’s operations. Towards the end of tho afternoon, the contents from the stalls wore disposed of by Butch auction, the auctioneer being Mr C. G. Baker, and from this source a good deal of revenue was received. There was a good muster of members of the South Canterbury Battalion Baud, and their programme of musical .selections was a feature of the afternoon. • Tho stalls and tho ladies in charge of them were as follows: Cakes, Mesdames Panton, Edyvean, Prosser and Stewart; bran dip, Misses Hawkes and Burrell; produce, Mesdames Baker, McKcague, Elder and Grainger; sweets and ice cream, Mesdames King, Kebby, Dunn, Slade and Miss King; afternoon tea, Mesdames Manning, Hamlyn, Watson, Gardync, AVhiiton, Frampton, Bird, Watt and Probyn. . The following were the winners or various competitions : —Guessing weight of lamb (s(ilbs) Mr Kebby (54J-lbs) ; nail-driving, ladies Mrs S. R- Bmiis, men Mr R. Prosser; best bagatelle aggregate, Miss (N. (McKcague; tin of biscuits, Mrs Maiming; bag of sugar, Mr 0. Johnstone; half lamb, Miss L. Thompson; small box ot - chocolates, Elsie Prosser; iced cake, (Mrs M atson . tin of biscuits, T. Patterson; pair ot slippers, Mr J. (McKcague; largo box of chocolates, Mr B. Mills;; bapof sugar Mrs N. Boivjj.es; pair of shoes, 1. Morgan; lueff- ticket, Mr R. S. Band. Mr N Thomson annexed • the putting competition, Mr F. Spiers the best bowling aggregate and also the best card, while Mr B. Menzies put m tho second best card.
