Sir Walter Gilbv’s counsel admitted that misconduct bad been going on for* 20 years. The hearing was adjourned. PARIS, -March 19. 1 Fifty French Senega lose Tirailleurs recently arrived in Syria, and attempted to march to Ra.shays, through hostile Druse tribes. Thev were ambushed and massacred. THE HAGUE, March 18. The Hungarian, Jankovitch, who was charged with attempting to pass forged French 1000 franc notes, was convicted and sentenced to three years imprisonment. Maroovski and Marcovitoh, who were charged jointly with Jankovitch, were each sentenced to two years’ imprisonment. LONDON. -March 19. The Labour Conference on the eight hours day, meeting in London, was attended by the Labour' Ministers of Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Belgium. They signed an agreement with the Labour Ministry. SYDNEY. March 21. The Department of Agriculture received a cablegram from the Administrator of Norfolk- Island, staling that flic exportation of apples and pears to thfit territory is prohibited. Tlic Department has cabled to Norfolk asking for iparthuilars and the reasons for the prohibition. MELBOURNE. March 21. The vital statistics for 1925 show that the Victorian death rate for the vear was the lowest on record, being 9.(7 per 1000 of the population, against 10.05~per 1000 the previous year.
The birth rate was also lower than in 1924, being ''21.49 per 1000 against 22:0. , - -
