A Press Association message from 'Wellington .says that out of -43,000 votes, only 1501. were recorded on'the proposal to establish a Fire Board—for 1073, against 113. A bare majority sufficed to carry the proposal.
After a week under canvas at Burnham, about 200 officers and men of the Canterbury Regiment (C.Y.C.), returned home shortly after one o’clock on Saturday afternoon.
The members qf the Mackenzie County Council had intended to leave to-day on a visit of inspection to the Tekapo Island, and other plantations, but owing to the possibility of equinoctial gales the visit was postponed.
A Press Association message from Christchurch' says that the condition of Lieut. Turner, injured in the areoplane .smash, is satisfactory, but still serious. The funeral of the late Lewis M. Reid took place on Saturday, when a guard of honour was formed by the aerodrome mechanical staff. Twelve flying officers were also present.
At- the Conference in Dunedin, the following resolution tvns carried unanimously:— “That this Federation strongly protest against the growing practice of wholesalers doing other than legitimate wholesale business.” Copies of the resolution are to be forwarded to the New Zealand AVholesulers’ Association and the Now Zealand Manufacturers’ Association.
Five hundred excursionists from Islington Freezing Works, visited Timaru on Saturday by special train, which arrived here at 1.45 a.m. The weather was not very promising in the morning, hut in the afternoon the sun appeared and an enjoyable time was spent on Caroline Bay and in exploring the town. The party entrained at 4.4 5 p.m., after a pleasant sojourn in this town.
AVhen the Hon. J. A. Young (Minister of Health), and Dr. Sir Truby King were in Timaru on Saturday, they visited the begonia house at Tima ru Park and were delighted with what they saw there. Sir Truby King jocularly remarked, after the visit, that as a result of what he had seen and what he had been told by the Curator (Mr D. N. Harper) lie believed he knew as much about the care and feeding of the young begonia as he knew about the care and feeding of babies.
Caclot-s from the Timaru Bovs’ Hi<>-h School, numbering about; 3o(), returned to 'timaru on Saturday morning from 'I cnuika, at tor a week’s' camp at that town. The camp was a very snecexstul one. Although there was freedom i rom sickness of any serious nature, it is reported that quite a number of lads tainted one day, supposedly through having partaken of stewed apples. it is understood that a quantity of apples bad been left overnight in agnivanised iron tank, amt were stewed next morning .Fortunately the affliction did Ytot bring with it any serious results.
G. S. Cabot, who won both the one and three mile walk championships at the New. Zealand championship meeting last week, is an old boy of the Timaru High School, and holds the School record for one mile. At the recent Otago championships Cabot, who won the mile in Gmin 35 2-ssec., three mile in 22min 21 l-ssec.., fin pressed the American athlete •). V. Scliolz, who stated, that his action was irreproachable. On the limes lie registered at this fixture and at the New Zealand championships, Cnbol should have excellent prospects ot success if lie is scut tc represent Now Zealand at the next Australasian meeting.
