THE KING’S FIFTY.
. BELT FINAL TO-DAY. HIGH SCORING AT TEENTHAM. By Tslecrarih —Prpss AasocUtlon. TEENTHAM, March 19. Habitues of Trentham smiled tins morning at the thought .of.-what was “coming” to the new men. Changing light, due to clouds, and around midday made worse by smoke from scrub fires, combined with a real Trentham “fishtail” wind —varying from the faintest zephyr to a fresh breeze —made the, marksman’s lot an unhappy one, and'many came to grief. The Otago Match,in the afternoon at 800_ and 900 yards proved a severe strain, hut though the score cards showed many lean patches the shooting among the fortunate ones was still very good. The King’s Fifty, to fire off for the Belt to-morrow (ten shots at 900 yards) emerged in the following order: — Caldwell (Karori) ... 511 Simmonds (Wanganui) ... 507 E. S. It, is notable that Caldwell’s aggregate is a record. Last year Andersjfh, the Belt winner, came back with 494 (the best aggregate). This year Anderson is onb; nine behind that total, and is forty-third in the. list. Last year 460 got into the King’s Fifty; this year it takes 473 to be in at the tail of the first hundred men. ’ At the end of the Hawke’s Bay Match, Caldwell, who was lying fifth last night, had pulled up to first place, followed by A. Harris and E. S. King, each 419. Then came Simmonds 416, and West 414, while Eoots, owing to his “crash” in this match, had fallen like Lucifer from his high overnight estate to sixth place with 412. After going through the gruelling twenty shots of the Otago Match at 800 and 900 yards, Caldwell was still three points ahead, but Simmonds had usurped the position of runner-up, with the two Kings next. Simmonds, it may be mentioned, has for the third successive year established a lead for the grand aggregate for all matches fired to date, with 711 points. The Imperial Aggregate for the Marlborough, Canterbury, Otago, Taranaki, and Dominion matches was won by R. J. King (Opaki) with a score of 395. His club mate H. Donald, was runner-up with 392. King takes the “Club” Coffee Cun.
