TIMARU FIRE BOARD.

QUARTERLY MEETING. ’The quarterly meeting of the Timaru Eire Board was held at the Timaru Eire Station yesterday-." Present.Messrs VV. Raymond (chairman), J. Hole, R. H. Crozier, J. F. Grierson, G. J. AVallace, C. S, Baker, H. Marshall, and H. H. Fraser, secretary. The Christchurch Eire Boaxd advised that they were unable to supply a simplex fire-box, as they only had one available. Tlie Canterbury Underwriters’ Association advised that in regard to the fire at tho Lo Grand Lounge, salvage wages would be paid to the men kept on duty after the fire. The Timaru Borough Council electrical department advised that they were prepared to place lamps over alarm boxes, and keep them lit, at a cost of £2 5s 9d each, per year. It was resolved that the question be held over in tho meantime. The Public Trustee wrote stating that interest on sinking fund from January Ist, 1925, would be increased by i per cent. INSPECTOR HUGO’S REPORT. Inspector Hugo reported that an inspection of tho Brigade and its equipment was made, when, at the inspection muster, there were present: The superintendent, deputy, -and 22 firemen, these, with one on leave, accounting for the full strength of tho Brigade, a very satisfactory attendance. Various inspection -drills were carried out in the efficient manner usual with the Timaru Brigade, and tho station and equipment were in firstclass order. The most important matters requiring attention, purchase of sections adjoining the central Fire Station, and the question of appointing a permanent superintendent of the Brigade, -were fully discussed, the same evening, with the chairman and certainmembers of the Board. He would, suggest the enrolling of a limited number* of men of good in the town to act as volunteer-fire police. The value of such a body of moil acting in conjunction with tho Brigade, and also the manv and various wavs m which they would be of good service, was fully explained to tlio superintendent 'at the time of his visit to Timaru. SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT. The superintendent, Mr P. Campbell,, reported that since last : meeting- . the Brigade held six wet practices, and one meeting, and also responded to eight alarms of fire, none of winch were of a serious nature. Fireman Marshall had resigned, owing to having been transferred to Invercargill, otherwise the personnel of the Brigade was the same as last meeting. On the, Bth. February, lnotorman Burtensliaw went on his annual leave, and liis place was filled bv motornian AVnght. Motorman McCann’s annual leave was also duo. All the equipment was in excellent order. He woiild ask the Board to supply the Brigade with 1000 feet of Rob Roy liose. In regard to the erection of fire alarm boxes in Barnard Street and Sophia Street, it was resolved that the secretary make inquiries, and report to the next meeting of the Board.
