The Geraldine St. Patrick’s Sport Association’s forty-eighth annn< gathering was held at Geraldine D( main yesterday. It happened fortur atcly that the weather, although cloud in the morning, 'considerably brighten ed in the afternoon, and an ideal da was enjoyed by 700 sporting or thusiasts. The financial aspect can b considered highly satisfactory, and i is comforting to the Association tha they can present such an attractiv programme of events, and at the sam time come out on the right side of tli ledger. The well-balanced programme and the methodical manner in which i was carried out, speaks volumes for tli energies of the strong committee wh successfully piloted it through to tli satisfaction of all concerned. The run ning and eye ing tracks were at tliei best, and some good times were re gistered. as a result of the prep::ratio and careful attention which the ground had received. The president of th Association (Air G. M. Patrick), tli hon. secretary (Air J. Kennedy), am the enthusiastic committee and official arc deserving of the highest praise fo the successful results achieved. The cycling events, which are looke'i upon by many as the events of the day were full of interest. The principa item on the, card was annexed by W AVillmott (Timaru), who lode with gooi judgment and secured the verdict lp a narrow margin. The veteran rider F. AVclls again faced the starter ii this event, bub he lacked the dash t< pass AVillmott and Tutty, who also pm • in a groat sprint at the end. AL Fitz gcrald (Victoria) was again in the pic tore, his brilliant sprinting in the fina of the mile and a half being a feature of the race. Ho had no easy task, however, in defeating AVillmott, who is fast coming into form again. C Bright (Christchurch), who performoc consistently in his heats, was by nr means disgraced by -having to accept third places. AVeils showed that he had lost none of his experience in lead ing the field homo' in the mile, after qualifying with fourth placo in his heat. AVard and Fitzgerald gavo a sterling exhibition in their heat, AVard obtaining the a gruelling race. AVclls judged . .his . sprint to a nicety in the final, although AVard wa: not easily disposed of. Climatic conditions were ideal for th; running events, which were watched with the keenest interest. The heats and the final were c’osely contested in the principal race of the day, the St. Patrick's Handicap, which was won by the Chertsey runner, R. D. Cameron, who was fully extended to dispose of C. Garven (AVashdyke) and F. Shea. The 75 yards was accounted for by IT. Gibbs after defeating J. S. Alurphv bv about two feet. R. I). Cameron cleared the hurdles in convincing style, and won with a hurdle to spare from his brother, with AT. AVilson third. Th? mile was rather devoid of interest, four contestants fating the starter. O'Brien led all the way, and won by about 20 yards from AVoods, with Alackie about the. same distance away third. The 200 yards Citizens’ Handicap was a popular addition to the card and fell to F. Shea, who was never headed in the fina 1 , and won by about a yard from Garven, with It. 11. Cameron third. In the final stages of the 880 yards Tate looked a possible winner after having run himself into a handy position, but O’Brien had a bit to spare and won by two yards, with Woods a yard away third. The 440 yards provided a victory for R. ,S. Harrington, who w r ”i by about two yards. Dr. Paterson’s handsome challenge cup. valued at £l2, for most points in running, cycling, and jumping events, was taken to Chertsey by R. D. Cameron with 7 points, and Cameron also earned off the cup in connection with the SI. Patrick's Handicap.
