Gloaming’s joints filled after his racing on the hard tracks at tlie recent Hawke’s bay meeting, so K. J. Mason lias eased hint in ins work. He has blistered the enlarged joints, and the champion will probably go into-retire-ment for a few months.
Mr G. Gerard, whose horses have been trained by J. B. Pearson for some time past, has engaged G. J. Pine to act as his private trainer. Pino will have a team of seven horses to start on, including Gyrene and Victory Bond, and a couple of well-bred 3-eariings. Those who should know say that Lcchson is just as clever over big country as he has shown himself to be over battens. Seeing that Lochson will bo well up in the weights in the big leading hurdle races to be decided during the winter, it would appear good business to devote this gelding’s energies to steeplecliasing, as the weight has not thei same efteet there.
About thirty of Mr I. G. Duncan’s brood mares arrived from the north on Thursday, and' were railed to North Otago. Mr Duncan is giving up the property at Waikanae, where he lias conducted his stud for a number of years, and lie will in future carry on at the Elderslie Stud, near Oainaru, having acquired that famous breeding establishment from Mr J. B. Reid. It is stated that there is a possibility of the Indian champion Orange William going to Australia. The Victorian jockey, E. Morris, has returned! from India, and he states that the horse might have already left Bombay. A certain regulation prevents horses from being shipped direct from India to Australia, and. if Orange William is to go to Australia he will first be sent to Marseilles. The reason for this procedure is that the authorities are afraid of an Indian horse disease being transported to the Commonwealth. Orange William, lias been for several years the champion racehorse of India, his victories including two Viceroy Cups and three King Emperor’s Cups.
