GERALDINE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. At the monthly meeting of the newly-formed Borough Council _ there were present—Mr J. Kennedy (Mayor), Councillors G. Sherratt, Dr. Paterson, A. Bell, E. White, W. Davison and E. H. Logan. Before commencing the business the Mayor stated that he was pleased to welcome all the old Councillors, and the new one, Councillor White. Councillor White brielly acknowledged the Mayor’s remarks. MOTION OF SYMPATHY. The Mayor made leenug reference to the death of the late Mr Massey, ami expressed me very great regret of the Councillors and burgesses of Geraldine. Me proposed that a motion of sympathy be sent Mrs Massey. and lannly. The iato Mr Massey had been held in high esteem owing to the great service he had rendered, nob only to the Dominion, but to the whole Empire. Ine motion was carried, members standing in respectful silence. DEPUTY MAYOR. On the motion of Councillor Davison, seconded by Councillor Paterson, Councillor Sherratt was unanimously elected Deputy-Mayor. Committees were appointed :—. Finance Councillors Sherratt (chairman), Kennedy and Paterson. Works—Councillors Davison (chairman), Bell, Sherratt, and White. Water—Councillors Kennedy (chairman), Logan and White. Lighting—Councillors E. H. Logan (chairman), Councillors A. J. Bell and -j. W. Davison. CORRESPONDENCE. Mr Jas Lonmer, as lessee of part Deserve No. 755, applied to have the corner asphalted, ana was prepared to pay half coat of asphalting,—Held over. Mr F. Piper on behalf of the Technical School, applied for the usual grant of £lo.—To be taken with the Estimates. The Timaru Harbour Board applied for a statement of all the rateable property’ of the Borough for the period front Ist April, 1925 to 31st March, 1926. FINANCIAL STATEMENT. Councillor Sherratt, chairman of the Finance Committee, reported that , receipts for the month had amounted to £46 15s 6d. The. District Fund Account showed a deficiency of £521 11s 7d. The Town Hall and Library Loan Account was shown to be in credit by £2114 9s lOd.—The report was adopted. REPORTS. The Librarian reported that during the month 411 books . were . issued. Receipts for the month amounted to £ls 13s 9d. F. Gaby, ranger, reported that lie had impounded during the month 6 cattle and 5 horses. OVERSEER’S REPORT. The overseer reported that the streets had been cleaned, and the channels and drains attended to within the borough. The reservoir had been emptied and thoroughly cleaned, and the walls washed and cemented. Leaks had been repaired in the main. Shingle had been carted to various parts in the borough, and crossings made to W. A. Sherratt, the Gospel Hall and G. Hayward’s. In connection with the Downs water scheme, Mr Bridges wished to know if the Council would sanction the pipes going through the bush along to Jollie Street. GENERAL. On the motion of Councillor Bell it was agreed that the old stable in Talbot Street, belonging to the Council bo removed-

Councillor Bell suggested that in view of the near completion or the 'town iiall some steps snouict bo taken with tiio object of letting same. the Mayor stated that the Clerk had writcen to a number of boroughs that owned municipal town halls. Councillors Sherratb and Bell were appointed representatives of tho Borough at the luneral of tho iato Mr Massey at Wellington on Thursday. The Council then sat as a .Domain and Cemetery Board. The hon. secretary of tho Geraldine Football Club (Mr E. Turner) wrote that tho Committee had passed the account due the Board lor rent or oval, and would pay same within a week or two. Councillor Slierratt said this _ was most unsatisfactory. They had either not got tho money to pay, or if the., had they should pay up. It was decided that the Club be turned off the oval if the amount was not paid immediately. The Domain Board Account showed a deficiency of £22 3s. The Council having passed a grant of £SO, left the account in credit by £2 17s. The Cemetery Account is in credit by £l4 Os 2d. MAYORAL DINNER. At the conclusion of the business tho Mayor (Mr .Kennedy) invited the members of the borough to a dinner at the Crown Hotel to mark the installation ceremony. They had gathered together, said the Mayor, under sad circumstances, as the Prime Minister of the country had so recently passed away. They all recognised his great north as a statesman. A comprehensive toast list was gono through, and a happy function closed with tho National Anthem and Auld Lang Syne.
