(From Our Own Correspondent.) THE LATE PRIME MINISTER. MEMORIAL SERVICE TO-DAY. The Mayor (Mr G. B. Cartwright) has received the following _ telegram from the Acting-Prime Minister, Sir Francis Bell: — “Ministers will bo pleased if you would invite citizens to close their places of business on Thursday, 14th inst., on occasion of funeral of late Mr Massey. It would also be appreciated if citizens wore asked to cease all activities for ten minutes from 1 p.m. For your information all trains and telegraphs will cease operations for rlmt time.” To-d'nv will be recognised as a day of mourning and all the places of business will be closed all day. A conirbined memorial service will be held in the Dominion Theatre at 2 o’clock this afternoon. The Mayor will preside. Mr T. Gminion left yesterday afternoon to represent Temuka at the funeral. Mr Gunnion also convoyed a wreath from tho citizens of the town, which consisted of chrysanthemums of the very choicest colours interspersed with maiden-hair fern. Tho inscription reads- —“A token of appreciation, sorrow and respect _ from the Mayor, Councillors and citizens of Temuka.” , GOLF. . Tho first match of the season was played on Saturday against Geraldine Club, in ideal weather, and resulted' iu a win for Temuka by the narrow margin of one game. Ihe majority of the games were very keenly contested, and the match was one of the most enjoyable) of the many played between the two clubs. Afternoon tea was kindly dspensed by Miss Guild. Geraldine 7} games; Temuka 8} games. On Saturday next a handicap bogey competition for ladies and men will be held on Temuka 1 inks. JUDGMENT SUMMONS. At the Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., J. Long (Hawera), proceeded against R. G. .Woodham on a judgment summons; for t-lio sum of £l4 16s 9d. Mr W. G. Aspinall, who appeared for plaintiff, examined the defendant, who said that ho had seven children, the eldest being fifteen years old. Ho was a dairy farmer, but ho was not making a success of it. The debt was for a photograph enlargement. No order was made. J. S. Shand and Co. (Mr F. J. Smith), sued Cyril John Moran, on a judgment summons for the sum of £l4 14 s Bd. In answer to Mr Smith, defendant could give no reason as to why he was described as a manager on the summons.. 110 did not pose as a manager, and ho had only been a labourer on the railway. Ho did not inform the firm that ho was a manager in order to get the goods. He had not worked for the past two years, and his mother fed and clothed him. _ The debt was for liquor, and at the time ho got it lio had full intention of paj'ing for it. To the Magistrate: Ho drank the liquor, but it had lasted a “good time.” There would be at least two cases, but it was not all whisky. No order was made.
CHRISTIAN CLUB, A meeting was liold in the Methodist Church on Tuesday night, to discuss what should bo done regarding holding the popular winter evenings during the coming session. It was stated that a general feeling existed that some change was necessary, and that the old form had served its purpose. The chairman (Rev. R. Richards), outlined a suggestion for the formation of a young peopio’s organisation after the club naturei. It was finally agreed to form a Young People's Christian Club. The constitution provided for the instruction and development ot mental and moral life among the young people on sound Christian principles, the club to be under the care and discipline of the Methodist Church, but without fostering religious differences. A nominal charge for membership shall be made, to cover expenses, but the usual meetings shall be open to all young people. In each meeting there is to be provided something for instruction, and also for recreation, but the spiritual and moral purpose shall be maintained.
Officers were elected as follows: President, Rev. It. Richards; vicepresidents, Miss Blown and Air Haj’man; • secretary, Air E. Mathieson ; treasurer, Air Tom Hancox. Committees will bo appointed when necessary, the officers meanwhile forming the executive.
PICTURES TO-NIGHT. Some of the most thrilling aeroplane stunts ever filmed, are promised in “The Fighting Adventurer.” Aluch of the action has to do with the daring efforts of a college youth who becomes a derelict in China. The story won a prize offered by the Universal Film Co. for the best scenario submitted in an inter-collegiate competition. Thirteen persons, all widely known to moving picture patrons, were selected to portray the leading characters. The supporting pictures include a Gazette and a comedy. Entertaining music will be provided by Campbell’s orchestra. NOTES. The Temuka Co-op. Dairy Coy’s lorries will not call on suppliers to-day, and the factory will bo closed. The concert to have been held in Milford this evening has been indefinitely postponed.
