Further evidence of tho advancement of South Canterbury in the eyes of tho financial concerns of tho Dominion is supplied in the establishment of a brand) office of the New Zealand State Fire Insurance Company in Timaru. Opened in 1905, with a capital of £2OOO (long since repaid with interest), the establishment of this office resulted in rates being reduced by an average of over 20 per cent., and a "total saving in the last 19 years of not less than £3,500,000. A large number of Gisborne C3’elists have had their machines stolen or “borrowed” recently, and the police are constantly having such thefts reported. In tho majority of cases the bicycles have been found in different parts of the town within a few days of tile theft, but in some instances they have not been heard of since. The polico state that many- of tho thefts are due to negligence on the part of the owi-ers, who leave their bicycles in side streets for several hours at a' time, some even leaving them out all night.
