SEEKING PRACTICAL SOLUTION. By Cabl*—Pres* Association— Copyright. Bydney ‘ ‘ Sun ' ’ Service, (Received May 11, 7.30 p.m.) LONDON, May 10. The “Dally News” states that it is reported that Mi: Baldwin and Sir William Steel Maitland (Minister ol Labour) met prominent Trade Union leaders, to discuss industrial stagnation. The purpose of the meeting was to sound the Trade Unionists regarding the Government summoning a representative conference of employers and workers to discuss mutual difficulties, and clear the way to a. constructive programme to overcome stagnation.
Some Trade Unionists, notably Mr J. H. Thomas, favour a conference, while others are strongly opposed to the idea, although Mr Baldwin, speaking at Birmingham recently, told the employers that they must not regard Labour factors as being solely responsible for the high costs of production. He declared that watered capital, inefficient management and wasteful marketing, also needed investigation.
