MAYOR AND COUNCIL INSTALLED

The initial meeting of the newlyclected Borougn Council was held on Wednesday evening, when the new Mayor (Air G. B. Cartwright) was installed and tho Councillors made the usual declaration. There were present: Tho retiring Alayor (Air T. Gunnion), the Alayor elect (Air G. B. Cartwright), and Councillors W. F. Evans, J. D. Sinclair, A. H. Fenn, E. Booth, A. W. Buzan, J. S. Leo, D. Alclnnes, D. White, ex-Councillors L. Robins, and Jas. Burns, Mr C. L. Fraser, manager Bank of Now Zealand, and Air W.- G. AspinaJl, Borough solicitor.-Ex-Councillor G. Hancox wrote apologising for absence, and wishing the new Council a successful term ox office.

The retiring Alayor, Air T.- Gunnion, took the chair and invested the Mayor elect, Air G. B. Cartwright. Ou taking the chair, tho Mayor said that he coiild assure them that he was out to do his best for the town. His would bo a hard task, following immediately in the footsteps of such a capable and energetic man as ex-Alayor Gunnion, but ho felt sure that the next two years would be full of prosperity and progress if he got the loyal assistance of all the Cpuncil. On the motion of tho Alayor, it was agreed that tho valuable services of ex-Alayor Gunnion, and ex-Councillors Geoi’ge Hancox, L. Robins and Jas. Burns be recorded in the minutes. Tho Alayor then welcomed the new members, Councillors Lee, White and Buzan.

Tho appointment of committees was then proceeded with. Councillor Evans said that in the past the Woi-ks Committee "had charge of tho Borough reserves, but on account of the loan work this Committee was overburdened, and ho suggested that tho following committees _be appointed :—Finance, -Works, Lighting, Sanitation and Reserves.

Councillor Sinclair, in seconding tho proposal, said that the question of letting tho reserves under the Glasgow lease system should bo kept in view. Councillor Booth said ior the past two years it had been tho custom to appoint tho chairmen of the three committees with the Mayor, to deal inth matters of urgency. lie would suggost that they be permanently appointed a pei’manent executive. Councillor Evans spoite xn support, and said that if Councillor Bootn would agree bo would embody it in ins motion. oounciiior Bootn consented, and. a motion to that eiiect was carried.

Tne following committees were then appointed: \Y or Its—Councillor Alclnnes (chairman), tho Alayor, Councillors Buzan and Bootn.

Finance—Councillors Ewans (chairman), Sinclair and Lee. Lighting, Sanitation and Reserves— Councillors Fenn (chairman) and White.

On tho motion of Councillor Booth, seconded by Councillor Gunnion, Councillor Evans was elected JJeputyAlayor. Domain Board AGsiting Committee— Tho Mayor, Councillors Gunnion, Booth, Buzan, Whito and Evans. Cemetery -Trustees Visiting Committee—Councillors Gunnion, Alclnnes, Sinclair, Fonn and Lee. At the conclusion of tho business Councillors adjourned to the Alayor’s room, when a number of toasts were honoured.

REFRESHER CAMP. . A refresher camp for officers, n.c.o’s and otner training for n.c.o’s of the C. Company of tne hirst .Battalion of tho Canterbury Regiment, was commenced in the Drill Hall, Temuka, on Wednesday. Major L. M. Inglis, M.C. is in command, and other members of the stair are Captain S. D. Mason, Lieut. Nicliolls, JLieut. Clements, and Second Lieutenants Jacques and Clements. There are 50 men all told and the course of training closes on May 13. , MOTIONS OF SYMPATHY. At the meeting of tlic Temuka Borougn Council tho retiring Mayor (Mr T.- Gunnion) made several sympathetic remarks regarding the passing away of several South Canterbury residents. The lata ex-Mnvor Frew, tho Mayor said, had been a member of the_ old 'town Board; and later was a Town Councillor, and was Deputy Mayor under Mr T. Buxton. Ho had died at a good old age, and had served the town and district faithfully and well; Mr C: N. Orbell, a well-known and I highly respected citizen of South Canterbury, had also gone to a wellearned rest, after many years of lin"elnsli work in the servioo of tho public, He (the speaker) had always regarded Mr Orbell as a personal friend, and had consulted him on many r.n 1 occasion, and he fc-!t his death very keenlv.On the molion of the Mayor, seconded by thu> Mnvor-elect, it was agreed to write to the relatives of tho deceased gentlemen expressing the Council's svmpnthy. At tho meeting of tho Borough Conned a vote of sympathy was passed with I the relatives of the late Mrs Clarke.
