PRAYER BOOK.
PROPOSED REVISION DISCUSSED. By C*bl«— Pies* AMoeliuion—Copyriuit. .lusirnliau nua N.o. Cubl#. Asuoiimuon MELBOURNE, May 7. At the Australian Congress of the Anglican Church,, an address concerning tha revision of the Prayer Book was delivered by the Loan of Bristol (England), the Very Bov, .E. Burroughs, who was one of the . six members in charge of tho Prayer Book revision, when it, came before the Houso of Clergy in 2923. He said the question had nrst arisen out of a Royal Commission on ecclesiastical discipline in 191)0. The inadequacy oi the sixteenth century forms and language, the necessity for softening the hard lines, the reformation ot theology, and the consequent rules and prohibitions were recognised by the Commission, but they desired no alteration in the doctrinal balance. The scope of these proposals had changed beyond recognition in the measure that came before the Church Assembly in 1923. The Dean dealt with the crucial position created by the demand for the reservation of the Sacrament. ‘‘We have been pushed step by step to a series of -rubrics, which although not so intended, can in fact be made to cover perpetual reservation. The sting lies in the fact that the AngloCatholic leaders have told us straight that' adoration is their ultimate aim. Many of us arc now wondeiing if we ought not to move back, and say there shall be no revision if it is only a cloak for reaction. 1 '
In conclusion, he appealed to his hearers that their attitude upon the question should be and should remain British. /
