ST. JOHN’S TENNIS CARNIVAL.
ENTHUSIASTIC GATHERING.
Thqfc the. efforts of the St. John’s Tennis Club to raise funds to provide for the laying down of two extra courts is .not only going to meet with the approval, as well as attract the support of the friends and supporters of the Club, was evident last night in the large-and decidedly enthusiastic attendance that. greated . tho opening of the carnival organised for that purpose .at St. Patrick's Hall, Browne afreet.
Punctually at , eight o’clock the carnival was declared open .by the Rev. Father Hurley. , Side shows, and stalls, well laden with all manner of dainty and useful articles, came in for their share of patronage, and the (Attendants wero kept busily occupied until the carnival closed for the night at about half-past fen. Hart boards and racing games were all crowded with contestants. Variety was lent by a programme of dancing events, arranged by Miss C. Kyle—a four handed Irish reel by Misses M. Donaldson, Richardson, Kyle and N. Spavin, and a sailor’s hornpipe by Miss N. Spavin. Further variation was provided by a large and well-balanced orchestra, under Miss Patrica Lynch. Bagpipe music for the dancing items was obligingly contributed by Mr Macdonald. The stall holders were as follows: Produce, Miss McAteer, and Mesdames Murdoch and Whitehead; , sweets, Misses Mason, Doyle, and Iv. Costigan; refreshment, and fancy stall, Misses Denneliy (2), Mrs Deeming, and Miss Collins; dip, Misses Kane and Costigan. The carnival will be continued this evening, and also to-morrow afternoon and evening. COMPETITIONS. The following were successful competitors : —Goose, Mrs Wurm: chocolates, Miss N. Scanned; cake, Rev, Father O’Meeghan; cake, Mrs Wurm.
