LADIES' BENEVOLENT SOCIETY.
To the Editor of the Thames Advertiser. Sib,—The information given in your columns yesterday in reference to the question asked in my last is to an extent satisfactory, bat not completely so. If my memory serves me right, the collection made was duly advertised to •be made for the benefit of the "Ladies' Benevolent Sooiety." Special reference to this excellent society was also made in the sermon preached. Will some one kindly explain what expenses had to be deducted from the amount collected for such a definite object? The expenses may have . been one, or partly all, of the following items Advertising the sermon, rent of church, or commission on taking up the collection. 1 presume it was neither of the two last items, and cannot see that justly it could have been the former. Had St.. Andrew's commemoration service been held, and no collection been made for the object alluded to, would not the expenses have been the same? . I think St. Andrew would not approve of such charity had he been present on that occasion. I think, in the interest of all concerned, it is desir'able that publicity be given to all the details of this matter. I have no doubt that Mr Bo we, equally with the writer, regrets the oversight, which haspressed heavily on those parties who, had the society been in possession of these funds, would have been relieved. Would it not be well , for the party chargeable with the neglect, when apologising to the ladies, to enclose a Christmas donation, and thus to an extent atone for the inadvertence.—l am, &e,, A Well-wisher to the Society,
