CRICKET: TRADESMEN'S V; THAMES C.C.
The knights of the willow mustered strongly at Cassia's ground in the Parajwai Gardens. ' Two'matches worff played' iat the same time, between the two first elevens and the two second.elevens of the two clubs.' The first eleven match resulted in an easier vic'ory for the Thames Club than was expected, ; by one innings. .The second eleven resulted in a win for •the Tradesmen's Club by 16 runs. BurIgess wqn the toss .for the Tradesmen, •and elected to go'in.' : Ward'elfad'd the 'captain first appeared, and steady play ;waß the order of the day. Bobiuson at length got one by Wardell. Hewitt fell a victim to the same bowler, after making 4. Hulme followed, and was neatly .caught by Bellers at the wicket. Paul ;now went on at Brassey's end, and got well on the spot at once, bowling Burgess, who looked like making a stand. The remaining wickets ; failed to add to the. score, with the exception of took, who' made 3, then put one up in the air, the skipper made a rush ; and secured "a' clean catch ; the innings closed for 27. The old club began batting by sending :in Schofield and Steedman, Burgess and Hewitt trundling. Burgess soon found Schofield's weak place., f >teedman let go the painter at Hewitt; and retired. Crawford, who took Schofield's place, was joined by Robinson, and the two were soon busy; the former at last hit'across one from the " pro" and walked to the pavilion. Paul filled the vacancy, but did not score, tiewitt bowling him with a slow bailer. As Crump joined his skipper, I heard an old sport say, " Now for some pretty cricket;" but the partnership did not last loug, the skipper retiring with l.b.w. to bis name for 28. Brassey was caught by the longstop. Bellers played a little'too late for -a shooter. Wliitfordand Higginson made 6 each; Jackson a single; Crump bringing out his bat for 19, got in his .well-known, style, making, with byes, a total of 91. The tradesmen again took the willow,, and with belter success, making 19 in a free style, that it does a cricketer good to see. Bull played a very steady innings of 16, which ought to have been more, but we do not all play alike. The innings closed for 64, making a grand total of 91. With reference to the play of yesterday, most of the'available talent on the .Thames was shining. Lankham we missed among our new cricketers this season. We have some good meu.. Burgess both slow underhand and medium round, with a good screw from leg, and no doubt when in practice would be well on the spot; as a bat he has a fine free upright style of play, drives and hits to leg, very hard, and knows the game. Many' of our young players would do well to watch how he makes the most of his height—the no poking his nose in the • blockhole. Hewitt, another acquisition, varies his pace very much as a bowler, 'and seldom bowls two balls the -same; he is a good steady bat, but out of practice. Paul, another bowler, both good and fast (his five wickets in about seven , overs speak for themselves). ' Wo have not seen so much much of him as a bat as we should like. Crump, though new here, is well kuown as an opponent. He can field away when particularly at the wicket, and as a bat ho has few equals. Burgess, Hewitt, Paul and Jiobinson all bowled well, as did Steedmm in the second innings. Bull longstopping and Bellers wicket-keeping were also good. We append the score! —'
