His counsel pleaded mental infirmity,| but the Bench failed to see it. Daniel Page deposed that defendant was quarrelling in the bar, when witness remonstrated with him. He said he would soon settle bim, and went away, ■ but returned in a few minutes afterwards, and discharged a gun into the bar, Several shots penetrated the building. The prisoner was very much intoxicated. Evidence was given to show that he had repeatedly threatened Page. The case was adjourned till Monday.-The Papakura people and their neighbours are agitating for the opening of the railway to Drury. At a meeting yesterday, they passed resolutions to that effect.
2 p.m. The ' Luna has arrived with the Suez mail. It is very small; only 13 bags. bharemai'ket:—The only sale to-day was City of Londons at 265. Buyers: Golden Calf (paid-up), 6s; Bismarck, Bs 6d. Sellers: Caledonian, £7; Cure, 8s 6d. The announcements of calls from the Thames caused gloomy faces on Y hange. Several f?ot-notes were added to the telegrams posted on the notice board on Change. '
5.55 p.m. The s.s. 'Pretty Jane' has arrived from Gisborne via Tauranga. On the passage she took shelter from a gale under White Island. Captain Fernandez says he hopes never to have to anchor thero again. The water was so deep that it was only just possible to hold 'on, and the atmosphere was so impregnated with sulphur dust from the volcano that it was very unpleasant both in its effects on breathing and appoarance, as everyone's complexion turned • into a dull leaden hue, and the particles of dust were very irritating to the throat. The colour of the ship's paint was visibly altered by the effect of the sulphur.—The 'Luna' has sailed again for Wellington.
