JOSH BILLING'S ESSAY ON MARRIAGE.
It is a fair transaction on the face of it, but there are too many put-up jobs in it. There is a great deal of moral grit,in marriage. It is the mortar that unites the whole of the social fabric. Some marry for money, and don't get' it. Some for pedigree. They feel good for six months, arid then weaken. Some "to please their relations, and then find they don't care a cent for them. Some marry for lore, without a cent or' a friend. There is a risk in this; but it is so honest that Heaven smiles on such marriages. Some marry a second time to get even. -But they find that it is a gambliog game, the more you pat down the less you take up. Some marry and oan't tell why,-and then live they can't tell how. Marriage is a good joke. It has its chances, which gives it its savour. All hope ■to wiu the prize. Some don't. lam authorised to state that if you win you get a big pile, and if you lose you are not the only man fooled.
