THE OHINEMURI QUESTION.

THE TBLEGRAM MYSTERY. I Wb have received a communication from Mr James Mackay, Jun, enclosing the ; following "copies of all telegrams from the . Honorable D. McLean to the Honorable Mr O'Rorke transmitted in December, ( 1873; also copies of two letters from a Mr T. B. Wilson to the Honorable Mr , Yogel." From them it will be seen that j Mr Wilson took portions from two tele- < grams, and adding the' words-"The Government do not wish the country to be opened "—made a telegram of a rather startling nature. The following is the t correspondence:— I [Telegram—Hon. D. McLean to Bon. Mr ' O'JBorke—December 18th, 1873. Tauranga to Auckland.] I . Tauranga, 13th December, 1873. Hon, Mr O'ftorke, Auckland. I You are no doubt fully acquainted with the diggers' excitement about Ohinemuri. I hope you will exert yourself in Auckland to see the ( editors connected with the press and endeavour to r-:frain them from adding to the present | irritating feeling which is being created between the races. Would you also consult with ( Attorney-General and WMtaker as to the legal ' steps to be taken in the event of a rush, or an 1 attempt at a rush, on native land at Ohinemuri. I will keep the office here open to-night to hear i what steps you have taken in the matter. The ' subject is one of importance to Auckland, and . the Superintendent should be seen by you, iu order that we should act in concert with him in the best means of repressing the present violent agitation, which is only ca'culated to delay the opening of the ountry and to defeat the object which the agitators profeS3 to have in view. (Signed) Donald McLean. True copy of original telegram — James Mackay, Jun. [Telegram—Hon. D. McLean to Hon. Mr O'fiorke-December 14th, 1873. Tau--langa to Auckland.] Tauranga, 14th December, 1873. Hon. Mr O'Eorke,- Auckland. Thanks very much for telegram, and also for trouble you have taken. I have heard from Mackay, and 1 do not anticipate that any rush will be attempted Still it is as well to get Attorney-General's opinion, (Signed) Dohald MoLeah. True copy of original telegram -James Maokav, Jun. [Telegram in Thame3 Advertiser, purprting to come from Hon. D. McLean,] (Date) 14fch December, 1873. "Thanks very much for telegram about Thames demonstration.
