SOUTHERN TELEGRAMS.

(Per Auglo-Australian Telegraph Press 'Agency.) Wellington, Wednesday, 7.55 p.m. The Post in to-night'a leader says they have reason to believe that Mr Vogel has strongly urged Mr Stafford to join the Government, and that the latter flatly refused, notwithstanding that Mr Yogel offered to resign the Premiership and go home either temporarily or to negociate the loans and the mail services, or permanently as Agont-General. Mr Stafford not only refused, but strongly objected to Mr Yogel's leaving the colony. He pointed out the financial dangers looming ahead, and said that through Mr Yogel's policy the country had been placed in a position of, a precarious character, and most forcibly dwelt upon the duty of Mr Yogel's awaiting in the colony the results of his own action. For himself lie refused absolutely to have any act or part in the matter, and said that if tho policy succeeded he had no wish to claim any credit, but if it failed he wished it to rest upon the right Bhoulders.—lt is reported that Major Atkinson has accepted a seat in the Cabinet.—lt is understoad that the manager of the Australian and New Zealand Land Company has arranged with the Government of this province for the purchase of 20,000 acres of the Ouroa block. The terms of the purchase are that Mr Douglas pays 12s Gd an acre for the land, and undertakes within a given period to expend at least £10,000 in improving the property, and settle 70 families in a special settlement, each family to have an allotment of 100 acres.
