MINING MATTERS.
-.- Junction TnmaTE.—A. parcel of 13 itons oi'quarlzifrouiitho Junction- tribute was crushed yesterday at the Kuranui battery for Catrail and. parly, ;au'd produced the. splendid yield oE.-ioozs' of retorted gold. : ■'
; A-LBtON—PoV.EETV - 'TRIBUTE.—A. l'Ctorting.took place yesterday at the Princo Alfred battery for Nortiiy and party, , tributers of the old Poverty and Charleston claim. The result fully met expec- ! tations, | ; and; when ' melteji amounted to l7Bozs lOdwts gold. Ihis./was' the yield from,CO tons of. stone. . iJ ' MoiifiniAßt.—The'gold®' lodged * 011 behalf of this company on Saturday was melted yesterday at the Bank of New Zealand into a bar weighing 3130zs lOdwts, ,tlie. loss ; in melting being, as usiial/very. trivial,- ratlier less than 1 per cent.
CaiedonillN.—The ; .usual•- wee'kly retorting for the Caledonian Company took ; placo yesterday, aud tho result was considerably in excess of previous yields, .although tho quantity of stuff reduced was 'less than -usual.. The total yield was 03 oz.s of melted; gold, ,ancl -. tlio /quantity reduced was 58 tons 4 cwt v It "was composed of equal proportions from the No. 4 winze workings and the old stopes, but it was from the stuff from tho latter workings that the largest proportion of the gold was obtained. In regard to tho workings of tho mine, there' is little to report/ Nothing has yet " .been done towards opening ;'out on the new reef intersected in the east cross-cut, but tho cross-cut • itself is being. driven ahead: towards the Cure boundary.' K contract for driving on the reef itself will bo let next Saturday, but operations will not, of course? ba commenced until.the following week.-: Very fair progress is being made with the west cross-cut to the hanging:wall side of the - main lodes, but although tho manager appears to 'be -pretty • confident ' -that' 'something', will bo found which' 'will prove worth' working in this section. of . the. mine, nothing of any great importance has yet 'come to band. In fact; no r'eefs" have yet been reached, although a few leaders and stringers havo been intersected.
Point Eussbm-Tmbjtib.—A. crushing of;about 40 tons' of 'stbne will be commenced. . to-day,at _ the Princo .Alfred battery, for Tea'sdale and party; tributes of the Point liussell mine,.. The stuff has not shown much gold, but is believed to be of payable quality., .
. Manokau.— A good rich show of gold was mot with yesterday in the No; 3 stopa, between the shaft and the cross-lode or 1 slide. This'section of the lode gives indications of very great richness. The length between the slide and the. shaft is 40 fodt, and during the time that it has been worked, but particularly since stoping commenced there has; been an excellent show of gold'visible throughout the stone broken out.. ..Yesterday there wore some really'good spbeimed to hand froiii'this' section, and also from the north face in the upper I'eVeli- 'A contract for' sinking the No. 2 wioze was let yesterday. The depth to which it has to bo sunk before it reaches the Golden Crown boundary has not yet been 'ascertained;' but it 'is now down 8 feet, and the contract has been lot for 20 feet of sinking.
Cirr op London.—The iadicationg met with in the drive on the No. 1 reef, to which we alluded in yesterday's issue have < correctly prognoatioated■ : tho junction with the No. 4, or east-and-west cross-reefy- as it was recently called. Tlie junction-was met with'yesterday; and a little gold was visible, so that the prospects are by no means/discouraging. There is.another, important fact, ascertained by this discovery, and that.is the distauce which fitill remains to be driven •before the other drive from the Gity of York boundary on the east and west lode is reached. This is 70 feet, and as the country is good there will'not- be much time lost t in effecting the much desired communication which is. to yenti-. late the-whole of tliis important section of the mine. We are glad to learn'thit the stoppage of operations in the Queen ol Beauty, and ~the stripping down of that company's shaft , wiil not in any way impede the progressive 1 Works ia the" Oity of London. To this level there is a good footway through the cornp iny's own shaft and wiuze, so that although quartz cannot be seat to the surface wiiti the same facilities as before, there will be no impediment to pushing oil the important works upon which the uianuger and men have for some tim-3 past b'cn engaged.
