DETENTION OF MAILS.

OtJR telegrams state that the mail steamer 'Cyphrenes' sailed at 430 yesterday afternoon with the outward Americm and English mails, so that the Tha-nos portion, which had been lying bagged since 2,30 on Monday, will necessarily be detained here another month before it is despatched. '!his is certainly not such treatment as the population of the Thames deserves, and wo hope the Mayor aud Councillors will represent the matter to the Postal Commissioner in order that an inquiry may bo instituted, and a repetition of sucti disappointment avoided for the future. It is too Imd that for the sake of a few hours' detention, which could have been made up increased steaming, a population of ten thousand should be thus altogether, ignored in the matter of its mail service. We feel quite sure if tha Postmaster of Auckland had taken the trouble to represent the matter in the proper quarter the few hours' detention would have been conceded -and we hope such negligence will be represented to the Government. As to theA.S.P. Company andits toysteamer, we are becoming reconciled to its freaks, and have long since ceased to rely upon its advertised time-table. We do blame our Auckland contemporary for aiding and abetting the company in its breaches of faith. The Herald of yesterday thus excuses the 'Crown's' neglect:—"The p.s. ' Golden Crown' omitted to make her usual trip to the Thames yesterday, on account of the severity of the weather, which would preclude the passengers from landing at Grahamstown." We refuse to accept the excuse, because it is lame and exaggerated. Wo will not characterise it more strongly, although we could with truth.
