' • ' Labceny. — Mary Anil Smith was charged with feloniously stealing a saucopau, value 2s, on or about the 31st ulfc., the property of Oliarles ffidd, of Short* 1 land.—The charge had been, at the request of Mr Uullen, remanded from Friday, for the purpose of having the. dofendaut medically eximiiied, .as she appeared to be ot unsound mind, afflicted with kleptomania. She now pleaded not guilty.—Mr..liullk slated that she had been exaraiued by Dr«. Kilgour and Lethbridge. He produced certificates froin them that tliey did not consider her of unsouud mind. He would, therefore, proceed with the case.—J Ufiarloai Kidd deposed that his sister, Kllen Kidd, re-' sided with him and kept house for, him. Believed tbo saucepan produced' was hw. He never gave it to the prisoner or to any one else.—Alien Kidd deposed' that the accused resided close to them. She missed a saucepan on last Wednesday. The last lime she roraerabored seeing it was the previous Saturday. She usually, , r kept it on a bench in lho yard, t which ; J™* fenced, with a gate wbielr had rio(.fastening. She would know the saucopau by the handle and some lead on the lid. She'identified the lid of the saucepan •„ produced by these marks. She never gave the aaucepan to the prisoner'or any," one else. She, paid 2* for it.—Detectivo Brennan deposed that he received informalion of the'loss of thk saucepm, ai-id from' the description given to him he identified it in the possession of the prisoner. If® arrested her, and charged her .with stealing it. Defendant denied having taken tho ; t saucepan. Slto had it.iu her ppasbssiott *; for nine years. One of'the remarks had evidently reference to the lady.
