Mr Reed gave notice of- his intention to move the following new clauses:—" 1. If any person liable to the' p*yment of any rate leviable under the said Act shall knowingly make false representations to the Board or to any District Committee for the purpose of being relieved from the payment of any suolr rate or any part thereof he shall be .deemed guilty of a broach of this Act, and shall on conviction thereof forfeit and pay any sum not exceeding ten pounds. 2. 'In addition to, any remedy given by the said Act for the recovery of rates leviable thereunder, it shall be lawful for any person duly authorised by the Superintendent in that behalf to proceed civilly in his own name in any Court of competent jurisdiction for the reoovery of any unpaid rate or rates." The House then went .into committee to further oonaider the bill:—
■ Mrßjylanmoved,"That the following new clause be made part of the bill: Notwithstanding anything in the said Act contained, wherever throughout the province, private common schools are now or miy be hereafter established, and whose suffioiency of accommodation, competency of teaching, school requirements, and effioienby in the secular instruction, required by the said Aot, are certified by the inspector, the Board shall «grant in support of such schools such annual sums of money respectively as shall, according to the average full at r tendance of children 1 at each of the said sohools, be sufficient to meet the same expenses and demands as are incurred and required respectively in the other schools established by the.Biard. And such private common sohools aforesaid shall be open to children of all denominations, who shall not receive any religious instruction without the express consent of their parents or other guardians in writing." ... The question was then put, and the Council divided with the following result:— -

Noes, B—tfessra Boylaa, Cadmin.Oarleton, Digaan, Douglas (Sir B.J, Lundon, O'Eorke, Peacooke. The mofcioa was consequently negatived by a majority of 23. Mr Prime moved the following resolution :-" That it shall be optional with the School Committee to allow a portion of the Holy Soriptures to be read at the opening of the school; without opm'ujnt by the teacher, provided also that no child shall be compelled to be, present at suoh time without the consont of its parents or guardian." ; :' ; Tho Council divided without any discussion.

The motion was consequently negatived by a majority of 10. - Mr Reed then moved the new clauses of which?he had given notice, and thev were agreed to. Progress was reported, and the bill now committed for verbal amendments in two clauses; after which, it was reported with amendments, aud.the third reading fixed for Monday. '..-.'■'• "■•
