«. _ Advertiser Office, Friday Evening. Business has not improved during the month, so far as the demand for imported goods is concerned, although the mining industry of the field shows signs of substantial progress, The number of payable and rich claims is on the increase, and the area of the field in good working condition was never seen to better advantage thau it is at present. The new finds we are almost monthly called upon to notify, and the steady returns yielded by much old ground, are evidence of the permanence of the field as a gold producer. The extensive works in progress and in contemplation are such as cannot fail to develop the resources of the district, which only require capital and labour to mature. The Old Whau mine, which has been steadily prospected for several years, ■ has at length paid £10,500 in dividends within a month, and promises to repeat the gift at no distant date, if present prospects continue. The Manukau mine is, after two or three years of inactivity, turning out very rich at low levels, and other claims aro expected to afford equally gratifying surprise to shareholders. ■ The export of timber. during the month has shown no diminution. The barque ' Oorrido 1 has sailed for Port. Lytfcelton with a cargo of 183,000 feet shipped at the Hauraki mills; and the brig 'Drover' has left for Newcastle,' N.S. W., with a cargo of 30,000 feet, shipped by the Shortland Saw Mill Company.
